Clutch help, s'il vous plait.... !?
« on: October 17, 2007, 07:55:56 PM »
So I have just got my top end re-ring'd and tweaked out - started it up today and it sounds good - BUT, my clutch isn't working.... I put the lifter rod in and followed the adjuster specs, but nothing is happening when I pull the lever. Anyone got some tips?

tia !,
-Carl

That happens when you have the pressure plate in the wrong position. It's four posts and four holes, but if you rotate in 90 degrees from the correct position, the pressure plate doesn't come flush with the clutch center, so the clutch won't compress.

If you have a CB500, like your avatar....contact Two Tired. I think he's memorized everything about the 500/550! If it's happened, he's probably fixed it before.  :D

I'm really a novice at the bottom-end/tranny of the motor. Yeah - I'm working on a '71 CB500, 4 cyl.

The pressure plate seems possible - when I turn the clutch adjustment screw - it doesn't give or start to 'resist' - it just feels like when I get to the rod, it hits something very rigid and won't budge.

How do I move the pressure plate?

thanks again!,
-Carl

You have to take it apart again. Make sure everything lines up correctly when you reassemble it.

Is it possible for the pressure plate to have moved without me taking the clutch apart?

I *did* remove the clutch cover to polish it up, but I did not disassemble the clutch. Just put the cover back on after polishing.

The ball bearing is in the adjuster.

Just a thought, did you remeber
to tighten the clutch adjuster
cinch bolt, next to the adjuster?

Pull off the clutch cover.  With one hand apply pressure to the adjusting bolt from the clutch plate side (inside).  With the other rotate the lower clutch lever.  Does the bolt move in and out as you accentuate the clutch lever?
Does it bind any way along its travel?  If so, then the problem is in the cover. For example, the clutch lever or bolt may have bent.   You will need to disassemble the release lever to inspect.

If no problem here, then the problem is in the pressure plate mechanisms, although I don't know how that's possible, if you haven't messed with it.
