350/400 combo?
« on: October 20, 2007, 01:58:36 PM »
Got my CB350f delivered today, as mentioned by knowledgeable folks on the forum yesterday, it appears to have a 400 engine, or at least clutch cover.  I wasn't expecting a drum brake on the front, is that stock for a '72?  It started up fairly easily and seems to run pretty smooth, I think it will make a good cafe project.

Any observations/comments?

The drum brake is not stock on any 350F.  It probably is from a twin.  I kinda dig the exhaust.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Looks like a 400F. Does it have a six speed trans? Then it's a 400F.

WTF is up with that exhaust  ;D  I dig that front fender.  I don't know much about 350's or 400's.  Is that stock?

Funny, first thing I noticed from the pics is that there are no dings in the tank :D
That will be handy when you get around to paint. That's definately a 400F clutch cover and as 333 said, drums did not come of 350F's. To me, that looks like a front end off of a 350 twin or similar. Right from the wheel to the guages. Maybe a CL model, given the high handle bar. The exhaust is made from the stock headers for the 350F with custom pipes welded on below the kicker. Hows' it sound?

Now, If you want to know if its a 400 engine or not, look on the front of the cylinders below the right two exhaust pipes. There is a place there that states the displacement. A 350F says 347cc and I beleive a 400F should say 408cc?
Also, like aptech77 said, the 400F's had a six speed tranny. The 350F a five.

Well the title says its a 72 350F.  I found a stamp on the engine that says 408cc, the only pics of a front drum are indeed a 350 twin but that bike has a different fender.  That stylin' exhaust is definitely homemade but its baffled somehow and its starting to grow on me.
I can't ride it or do any wrenching yet cuz I'm waiting for the arm I broke last spring to heal completely, that just gives me time to decide on mods and what color to paint.

We must've been typing at the same time, the exhaust is a little louder than I'm used to (stock Interceptors) but it might be just about right for this project. I'll try to get a sound file tomorrow.

By the way, I can tell already this is a great forum and I really appreciate the advice and info given so far.

Broken arm!! go easy moving that ol' bike around  ;)
So it's a 400 engine. Thats good, I think there a little easier to find parts for. If I remember right, the 400F put out 38 hp stock and the 350F 32 hp. So you've got a few more ponnies too.
Have to do something about that clutch cable location though, thats not stock for sure..  :D
