Another take on the duel disc project
« on: October 21, 2007, 10:13:14 PM »
I'm building a bike for a buddy and with the parts I had I wanted to do this conversion.  To make a long story short, I have one 500 front end, along with a 550 front and a 750 front as parts.  All of which are going onto the 72 500 frame. The wheels and tires were new from the 750 which was the main motivation in the first place.  I also had a set of polished 750 forks laying around.  After reading the FAQ writeup about the 500/550 I swore I was missing some parts but decided to go for it anyways.  I ended up with a solution that works for me and I didn't have to buy anything "special".  All I used were parts from the 500 and 550.  The main issue I was battling was getting the speedo to mate to the speedo hub on the side with the new disc.

Like so:

Instead of buying a K0 speedo I took the hub and cut off the bottom half:

I ground down the edges so it fits flush with the hub in between the disc and clearanced the speedo so it would clear the new longer bolts:

I bolted it together and was good to go.  Just my thoughts in case there are others who are as impatient as I am and have parts to grind on.

A breif history of the bike -

As I bought it:

As she sits in my garage tonight:

Not clear on how you made the drive plate "drive"
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

unless he bent the edge a bit to dive on the hub, it will probably spin after a while..... or was there a tag put on the back?

--Did my dual disc the same way but I didn't cut it all the way around-left about 1/2 inch of metal on the plate and bent it up so it catches one of the bolts and doesn't spin.
If you catch my drift ?

I guess the plan was flawed~  Seems easy to fix with bending the tab to catch on the hub.

it doesnt have to be much, just enough to drive, if you go too crazy, it might cause a bit of drama..

good luck with it, BTW you can use a cb550/500 speedo drive...

if it fits in the centre of the disc, and has a drive tag on it, go for it, the only reason i know the 550/500 one works it b/c i bought another speedo drive off ebay, and thought it was for the 750, but when i pulled it all appart turned out this was a perfect fit!!!... just lucky...
