Gone flyin' (pics)
« on: October 22, 2007, 02:15:09 PM »
I figured there must be more than a few Pilots in our member pool so I thought I'd make a thread where we can post flying pics.

Today I rented this C-172 for two hours and took my brother up for the first time in a float plane. There taking it out of the water this week for the winter so today was my last chance to get up.

Lots of fun, went to Orillia from Holland Landing (S. Ontario folks might know the area). A bit windy, 25 kts out of the SW. Had a blast  ;D

First pic is the Holland Landing river where we left, outside of Bradford Ont.

Feel free to add on with your own pics/stories...

I've never owned a boat, but I assume the same deal about having lots of new friends applies.

I agree with kghost. After flying over 100,000 miles each year for the last 5 years I worked, I didn't really feel like getting into an airplane over the weekends. And this flying was just as a passenger.

I do miss it though...especially the time it would save on trips. I'm sure I wouldn't miss the expense of filling up the tanks...and lots more expenses.  :o

I think I'll stick with the bikes!  ;D

I'll be flying tomorrow, but I'll be in back.  I leave that stuff to the guys up front.  They don't want to be messing with blood and drugs, and I don't want to messing with yoke and throttle.

After 10,000 hrs and 6 types I have enough pictures to choke a horse.

But they are of some damn interesting places.

Since we have a couple of pilots here, I was just watching CNN Re: Cal. fires (ugh, feel for those folks). They were following a high-wing, twin engine plane dropping water. They followed it long enough to where it dipped to the surface of some body of water to refill. Looked to be, litterally scimming the surface scooping up water on the fly. That must take some kind of flying skill.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I didn't see it Bob but it was probably a CL-415. Built in Canada by Bombardier.
They have scoops on the bottom of the "hull" right behind the step that pick up the water as they skim the surface. When the tank is full, the water will shoot out an overflow valve on the side of the plane. Then, there are doors on the bottom to release the water out. It does take a bit of skill, I had a friend who flew one for the Ministy of Natural Resources up here in Canada fighting forest fires for a bit.

Lets pray for some rain for those folks down there, They seem to get no end of the wrath from Mother nature..

Interesting big brother. ;) The skill level is amazing to me. There must be some very noticeable drag increase on contact with the water surface, plus the pilot has to deal with the rapidly increasing weight of the aircraft as it fills with water.

I'm not a pilot...yet.  :D I've always wanted to get my license but the time and money hasn't come to me. It is a goal of mine though.

In the meantime I get to occasionally go up with my boss' brother. Last year my youngest daughter was begging me to get Joe to take us up for her first flight. Joe let me take the controls this time (I could've the last time but my oldest daughter was airsick and didn't trust me  ;D ;D ) and I probably got about 45 minutes of flying time. Man, I didn't want to land! Anyway, here's some pics:

Well, I love planes, trains, cars, motorcycles, boats, etc so i don't mind at all. The train only comes by once a day when we're home and they take it slow so it's not loud. My young son loves it too and toddles to the window to watch it.  8) That's actually a church on the other side of the tracks but we are in line with the little airport to our north. The biggest thing that's flown over my house was a B-17 a few weeks ago. I wish I could have gotten the camera in time. What a sound! Here's a pic through my back window when the house was under construction:

Just saw on the news that the Martin Mars planes from Vancouver Island are heading down to CA to help fight the fires.
