Tappet/Valve Adjustment after Disassembly/Reassembly - CB500/4

I've tried the factory manual and a quick search here, but I'm still confused.

Manual says the "T" 1-4 mark is used to determine cam/crank position, but how do I know that I am on TDC of the compression stroke if I've loosened all of the adjustment screws to prevent damage?  ???

Any help? Thanks!!!

I think he means with the adjusters loose neither #1 or #4 valves will move so there's no easy way to tell which one is on the compression stroke.

I would thread both #1 and #4 valve adjusters the same number of turns intake and exhaust when at the T 1-4 mark and you will immediately notice which ones can be threaded more than the others.

On the cylinder where both adjusters went farther in evenly that's where you have compression.

On the one where the adjusters are uneven and "less threaded" for a lack of a better term you're on the exhaust-intake stroke.

Hope I didn't make it more complicated.

Good call rhinoracer, I thought I was missing something :D

You'd be all day trying to find a tight tappet with them all loosened off :o

while they all might be loosened the same amount of turns out, you may need to do the feel which one is opening and come back around to TDC, like Oldschool_iscool suggested in that linked thread above.
