Forming my engine parts shopping list...advice?
« on: October 21, 2007, 08:14:43 PM »
I've finally got my entire CB350F (spare) engine apart and laid out on the bench. Cylinders after the honing are within spec and so far, the crank and rod bearings look good.

As I build the shopping lists, I have a few questions...

The main chain-- does everybody replace this when they build a new engine or should mine be o.k.
Its got about 19k on it, seems a bit loose but I don't know what's typical. Same question goes for those rubber cushions.

Gasket sets-- Do all the seals (Valve seals and crank etc..) come in a complete gasket set from Honda? Are the aftermarket sets on ebay worth the savings?

Bearings-- The roller bearings are tight, but again, do you guys replace them anyway?

Thanks for any advice or thoughts you might have.
   Matt.  :)

Think of this as a rare oportunity to be able to put you motor back together and actually know what is in it, and  who did the work.  I would definitely change all oil seals, O-rings and gaskets that you come across.  There are some good sources for gasket sets that you can get for your bike but do some research before buying and ask around on the forum for some reviews on different products before buying, chances are that someone here has used it before and knows the quality of it.  Anyways, good luck on the shopping list and keep us posted...............Chris

Primary and cam chains whilst it is in bits plus all gaskets seals etc and make sure the cam chain tensioner is free to work properly, probably fit new spring to it

Well I have to replace the tensioner and chain anyway, that's a given. I'm also replacing all the seals/gaskets too.
My concern is that if I buy a new main chain, it will be no tighter than the old one. Same goes for bearings, I'd rather trust an old bearing in good shape than plunk in a new one that may have flaws or won't be any tighter.

Well my list is done, rather than debate which parts are o.k. and which to replace I'm just going to replace them all. ;)
No sense nickel and diming now, and your right, when it's done I'll know whats in there.
