How does this sound??
« on: August 20, 2010, 08:54:48 PM »
Finally getting close to being done (78 750k), but I think something may be awry.  I have no idea what these things are supposed to sound like so i am at a disadvantage (fist sohc, first bike).

The video is after cam tension adjustment but i am still hearing an intermittent knocking.  If you close your eyes you can kind of hear it in the background around second 13 and 20.  It doesn't sound associated with the bike but it is.  Very noticeable in person and I have no idea what it is.

Can't make it out either. If it does it after you blip the throttle, when the revs drop, then it's (usually)rod bearings. Oil looks good, i.e. not too glittery? Pressure okay?

After listening it to it a few times I heard it. There were three clunks that I could make out. Almost sounded like an exhaust "clunk" to me, almost like a misfire. Some more video, or even audio only would be helpful... As far as I stand, it sounds to me like a misfire. Have you checked the plugs out? Done a compression test? Valve check?

That clunk you hear is probably related to the fact that your carbs need to be adjusted and/or cleaned.  Most likely it is running lean on one or more cylinders.  That is very typical.  I don't suspect anything major is wrong with your engine - they are very stout and well engineered for their time.  Hope this helps.

Thanks all, i appreciate the input.  After minimal bribes, Andy750 was nice enough to swing by my place today and give it a look (thanks again Andy!).  He also said it sounded like it was an exhaust clunk from the carbs not being synced.  He said the engine sounded good otherwise and the plugs looked fine.  We fiddled a bit with the carbs, but we were having trouble getting it to idle without the choke.  He suggested i adjust the valves and put the airbox on before we use the carbtune.   It was also recommend to recheck the timing and re-adjust the cam chain tensioner.  It looks like the to-do list just got a little longer  ;D

The "to do list" is seemingly never ending.  :P
