Kreem Coating Removal
« on: October 24, 2007, 08:43:01 AM »
I have tank that's been coated.  I searched the site and seems MEK is what is recommended.  Anyone have any luck with some other method that's cheap and easy.  Not worried about the paint because is greating stripped and repainted anyway.

I removed my KREEM liner with M.E.K. Picked up the chemical at Home Depot. I've heard that straigh Acetone works, too, but evaporates much quicker than MEK when working with it.

Soak, agitate. Soak, agitate. Soak, agaitate. Repeat...

1 gallon of acetone
500 Daisy BB's
agitate hourly (except at night when I was asleep)
26 hours later it hadn't done a damn thing.
I gave up and bought a tank on eBay.
 problem solved.

MEK might work, but save your money on the acetone.

Doesn't POR15 sell a product that strips the old tank liner out so you can use their tank liner system?

I had my 750 F tank metal stripped. That took both the inside and out to bare metal. The tank had a lining, product unknown but she was clean when I got her back. To prevent flash rust I dipped it over night in POR-15 Metal Ready. They claim it neutralizes rust and it leaves a coating of zinc. It worked great. As soon as she dries I will put the liner in.

* Don't make my mistake, BB's in my case worked great on the non-striped tank (750 F), but getting them out has proven to be a nightmare. I will not be doing that again!!! *
