Topic: Anyone got Vintage Audio to match your Vintage Ride.?

Just this spring I got a pair of 1 owner Sansui Amps.

BA 3000 and CA 3000 plus a Dual turntable and Altecs


Man that still sounds as good as when my buddy got them brand new in about 75,, the amps cost more than a brand new cb750!!... and are still quite desireable..

 Havent hooked up the Altecs they need some work.. got a cheap pair of 90 Watt Sansui speakers.. to keep me in line..  as much as I need for in the shop..

I am not an audiophile got a bad ear for music. However though I can see the difference now,  and it sure reminds me of the old days..

Anyone else listen to vintage audio and vinyl??

Older electronics interest me too. My pair of Kenwood amps are a few years older than my 78 scooter and driving just as hard as they were when they were made. Brushed aluminum face, big knobs, glowin tubes, insert tim allen grunt here...

 I have a Berning EA2-150 tube amp.
Very basic--looks like a science fair project--great sound
I play 60's vinyl through it.
Built by a kid in Potomac, Md. in the 70's.
This was one of his first commercial offerings.
He now sells amps for many thousands--has some patents etc.
Also run 45's through it with recent acquisition of RCA RJ-12

Rega Planar 2 turntable (the one with the glass platter - to play 45s you have to remove the platter and move the drive band up on the pulley)

 I wish I had tunes her at home by the puter.. but my stereo is in my shop. I reall like cranking up stuff like Inna-Gadda-da-Vida, Yes...Roundabout, Heavy Cream.. Big Brother & the Holding Co ..with Janis...... stuff like that

great old stuff you own. I repair and refirbish turntables as
part of my work. Behold this newly refurbed Dual 701, the first
direct drive table they made. Works like new now!

My most prized posession is my KLH Mod 8. I was a stock boy/Installer for a high end Audio store in Scarsdale Ny. Rich people always wanted these radios delivered. I had to of course go through the back door (of course) take it out of the box plug it in and tune it to the Classical station. I MIGHT get 50 cents or a Dollar tip. I vowed I would have one of those sum#$%*es some day. It took me 20 years, but I got one. For everyday use I use a Tivoli One upstairs and a Denon Component System pumped through a pair of Bose and a pair of Advents in the family room.

Did you guys sell Sansui?? I once read that the Sansui BA and Ca 3000 had only about 50 sets brought into the US.. I sorta think it had to be more. I could see it maybe on the 5000 amp..

Actually in the late 60's Japanese audio was not considered very good. He only sold American and European with one exception which was Sony Superscope and only the Reel to Reel and 8 track. Everything else was Fisher, McIntosh, Revox, Tandberg, KLH. A lot of Sansui was sold in American PXs during Vietnam. This was also true of Akai. I am not sure why that was. It took a while for Japan to gain traction among audiophiles.

I've got a Sausui Au-717 integrated amp and Tu-717 tuner that are nearly perfect.  They look and sound great.  Had to have them both serviced and have a few small parts replaced but very solid performers overall.  They both date back to 1978 when Sansui were building top notch components.  I'm currently using the amp as a preamp to drive the Dynaco St-410 200 wpc amp which powers a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10s.  Sounds great!  I have a pair of modified Dynaco Mark III monoblocs and a Pas 3x preamp that need a little work to make it back into the rack.    I also have a very old A/D/S cd player that works flawlessly and looks like new despite being over 20 years old.  Sucker weighs like 45 pounds!  I recently scored a silver pioneer TT at a yard sale for 3 bucks.  It needs a new cartridge and some cleaning/adjustment but should prove to be a nice unit regardless. 
  I would love to come across a Sansui Ba/Ca combo at a yard sale.  I think it's what keeps me going!

I've got a 60's Sansui, a really big and heavy Sanyo, a pair of EV SentryV 's, a really old set of Warfedale's, and a few older advents. Reel to reels, 8tracks, 8mm, 16mm, Laserdisc, videodisc...

Not very high end, but I've got JBL L36's connected to my modern Technics amp.  I really like them.  I have a Technics turntable and about 100 albums I haven't listened to in a while.  I have a Superscope 1/4" reel to reel next to an Akai 1710 on the shelf next to an old RCA bakelite plastic 45 player very similar to yours Gerhed.

i have an early production pai of bose 601's playing for the time being through a modern-ish yamaha integrated amplifier, i keep on hoping to find maybe a pair of macintosh amps, and pre-amp. i listen to ALOT of the grateful dead, in fact i have several original reel-to-reel dead tapes. hendrix, janis, the doors, syd barrett pink floyd

I have a good acquaintance that repairs Vintage equipment. He is a genius at 16 he was chief engineer at Bozak speakers. He is now making new B&O cartridges. He explained that the Vintage gear unlike today's gear had a few advantages. The Vintage gear had real transformers which is why the stuff weighed a ton. The Vintage gear had to deliver the entire range of sounds as did the speakers. Today the stuff is very inherently tinny and effects and subwoofers are used to make up the difference. People are Bass crazy today. Try playing some good Jazz on one of these Mall Rat monsters and you lose the nuances that makes for a great performance. Sansui was really good stuff but somehow they never marketed correctly. I find the best buy on the Market in Vintage is the Yamaha Natural Sound line. They were built like tanks and had wire wound pots that never seem to fail. When I bought one a quick spritz for good measure and it went up for sale. If you find one buy it and you will give it to you grandkids.

You will overpay for McIntosh. It is a yuppie wet dream. Good stuff, but not at the prices a good piece goes for. You can still buy Mcintosh  new. They are in Binghampton NY. If not the guy I mentioned has them. Check out Soundsmith in Peekskill NY.

I would have never predicted this.  But, I am STILL using my 1972 Sansui 7000 Receiver I got from the Navy PX in the Philippines..  About 10 years ago, I had to go through all the switch contacts, clean and lube them.  Other than that, it still works great and drives all the speakers throughout my house and garage.

I had to retire my 1972 Gerrard Zero 100, as the turntable rumble from the hardened rubber drive wheel got annoying and unsuitable for recording transfer.  I found a Yamaha P350 Belt drive turntable to use, instead.  I think I paid $20 for it. Just needed a new belt.  I don't really use the Sony TC-650 Reel to reel much anymore.  But, I still have about 400 Vinyl record albums.  Most of these were played once or twice to get them onto tape.  Now, I am slowly transferring these to CD or MP3.

Any of you guys own those vintage flat panel speakers.  I used to know this dude who had a set in his basement, and I always bugged em about selling them.  No dice.   I don't remember the manufacturer though, But I have read about them in old audiophile mags, very desirable.

Recently I've been trying to start a collection of old boom boxes, ghettoblasters etc. I have 2 now, a jvc with ceramic speakers that still scream weighing in at about 25lbs and a Panasonic 3 speaker monstrosity. 
what I've been looking for is a nice JVC RCM90 and a Panasonic RX7700 both the holy grails of boombaxes.  Real hard to find and not cheap.
Anybody got some they want to get rid of?

Quad Electrostatics if I recall. £2k a pair back in the 70's (when a CB750 cost £1k)

Mine's like that, not that one specifically.  Mine's not in that good of shape - I inherited it from my grandmother (who got it from her aunt if I remember right) and it's seen better days. She remarried briefly in the late 80's and when they split up her ex shipped her stuff back to Cincinnatti from Seattle and did a very poor job of packing it. The tonearm was broken and the cabinet joints separated. I've got the cabinet pretty secure but the legs are a bit wobbly. I have the tonearm held together with plastic zip ties so I can listen to it from time to time until I can find a replacement.

It is an odd piece of furniture in that it takes up room and you don't want to set stuff on it. Even with all of its scratches and dulled veneer, it's still cool to look at though. It's funny how many people pay no attention to it until you open it up.
