Exhaust options for '78 750F header
« on: July 20, 2005, 11:07:33 AM »
Bike is nearing completion and I'm looking for an exhaust that will work well with the 836 motor. I'm looking for a muffler that will fit the 1 3/4 stock header. Most aftermarket/universal type mufflers I've seen offer a "quiet" tone which I interpret as "too restrictive". Supertrapp offers some pricey options but I have no idea if they will work.

I can always get a Kerker off of ebay, or even new$$$$$, but would much rather keep the stock header as it offers good clearance and I wouldn't have to pull the studs out of the head and add "spigots". Any ideas?

I use a Vance & Hines Megaphone.  I can post the part number if you like.

You can machine an end can for cheap if you have access to a lathe, improved go and sport bike snarl.Or,buy a cheap replacement megaphone(EMGO,etc.)and make a free-flow baffle for it.The ones with the Allen screws on outlet end are replaceable baffles.

Yes Greg, a part # would be great.

Thanks Canary, I don't have any machining tools/experience but there is a local shop that could help if I need to go this rout. Anyone fit a "expander?" to a 1 3/4" exhaust to accomodate a 2" muffler? This would certainly increase my options.

And thanks Genrl. I saw that auction as well. Unfortunately it is for the 79-82 DOHC Bikes and would not fit my '78 SOHC. I have a MAC header which is very similar but both would require a different mounting set-up than I currently have. That is why I'm looking for a muffler/silencer to fit my existing header.

When I got the V & H it was a perfect match for end of the F pipe.  I had to use a 9" chrome strap mounted to the rear foot peg bolt.  I'll take some photo's.  It will give me a reason to attempt to post a photo.  The old quest of knowledge thing.  I'm at work now trying to pay for all of this stuff.

I used 4 emgo slash cut megaphones. They were a bit shorter by about 4 inches than the stock ones were BUT I think they look better and they do sound good. They give the bike a sportier look. You can extra long ones that are close to the same lenth, maybe an inch difference.  The ones I got do have a bolt to pull the baffles out if you wish.

After-market slip-ons come with adapter sleeves.

They doo but they kinda suck. I had an adaptor made from exhaust tubing which can be clamped or welded. The pipes do not seal very well with the adaptors if you have to use more than 1.

TBS,precision machining an adapter for the header outlet is better.

Found this on Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4563005824&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

The mounting collars got me curious so I asked the seller. He claims that it mounts to the engine studs without using "spigots". I wasn't aware that Kerker ever made this type for the SOHC, but I'll certainly bid if it's a "rare find". Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Yeah, one thought!

I thought I heard somewhere that the '75 and '76 exhaust were identical and the '77 and later were, but that they could not be interchanged. I don't know why. I recall seeing different listings for aftermarket systems for the different year F models an in '75-'76 for one number and '77-'79 for another.
It might not fit your '78.

Yeah, I think the difference between the years is that the 77-78 don't use "spigots" and have mounting studs in the head. My guess is that this guy fit a later year Kerker to his '75 by removing "spigots" and adding mounting studs. Just not sure how MUCH later and for which bike it was originally intended for. I'll mail him again and see if he knows.

...yes, all the pipes 69-78 will fit, its just the 69-76 used the spigots with flanges, and the 77/78 use the newer flanges with "half-moon" adapters...

Sean, the Kerker is the only one I know of. I was talking to Mark McGrew a little while ago and during the conversation he asked what kind of exhaust I was running(which is a Hindle-no longer available). He said he talked to Lang Hindle at Daytona and asked about making a run of pipes. Lang said he would have to make 1,500 units(at least). No dice. :(

MSRP on these pipes is $585. BikeBandit has them listed for $526 or so. I swear I saw some for $499, I just can't remember where.
