Master cylinder Mystery
« on: October 27, 2007, 03:06:04 PM »
What master cylinder is this on my 1975 550F and is it safe. It seems to work ok but I experienced the slow lever to handlebar leak feel of a needed rebuild. As you can see, the brake line seems long from the cylinder to the metal line. Does the  CB750 master cylinder fit the 550F as there seems to be more of those available. Should I decide to rebuild this one, basically............what is it.

It actuallly looks like a Yamaha MC. I was working on for a friend. You should have no problem swapping it for a 750 MC.

looks like a Yam's to me too.

no harm in that, as long as the size is right.

Are you running twin disc or single disc?

would go with 14mm for twin and 1/2" for single. size is written usually on the pump's body or inside the reservoir

it wouldnt hurt changing that aged rubber hose too....

Thanks for the help. I think I'm going to replace the cylinder with a honda piece. Although I'm not doing a show quality restoration, I'd like to be at least correct. What I'd like to know is if the 550F and 750 use the same round master cylinder. there are few 550 cylinders available on eBay while there are many 750 units.

best way to find out is to go to one of the parts fiche sites and compare the part numbers between the models.  I usually use http://www.cmsnl.com/

Happy hunting...

Hey if it helps there is a guy on ebay selling new master cylinders for about 75 bucks. I put one on my 82 CB650SC with twin calipers and it works great!. Only thing is it has chrome lever with silver body so it dosent quite match... looks ok though. Wish I could find some cheap steel lines to replace the rubber. Also you might want to flush your lines and use all new sealing washers and rebuild your calipers if the bike is that old.. just a suggestion
