My winter project, picking it up next week.
« on: October 30, 2007, 09:00:43 AM »
Guys,

I just bought my next project this morning.  I am picking it up next week.  It is only five miles from my house, but I am too busy to get it right now.  It ran three years ago and has been stored in a heated garage since then.

I plan to get it running and will ride it until it just gets too cold.  It should be fun in the snow.

I don't know much about these XL 125s.  If you have info please share.

Here are some pics:

Nice little bikes but stock up on chain and sprockets; oil (needs changing VERY frequently) brake shoes and cable plus bulbs (they vibrate a tad at highway speeds!)

Apart from that all you will need is a wide belt as a back brace and maybe some preparation H (seats are HARD).

Seem to remember a centrifugal oil filter and a sucktion strainer inside the clutch cover but its been a long time
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Excellent choice as it's a fine complement to the big bike. I've got a 200cc dual sport to serve same purpose.

Mike, can we double the horsepower on this engine?  I think it is around 12 HP stock.

Nice find Art, It's a spin off the CB125s and realy is tuneable.  A guy named Brad O'conner got 28bhp out of one a few years ago.

I had an XL175, very similar, when I was a photojournalist in Manila back in the early '80s.  Put street tires on it, a Powroll stroker kit in it, lowered the forks in the triple clamps, and had an absolute blast.  More than once when I was being followed by "undercover" agents from the Marcos gov't, that skinny little Honda zigged me through traffic and got me to the next event.  It was plenty fast and torquey for congested city traffic.

You won't be carrying memories like mine, but I'll bet you enjoy that little Honda more than its displacement might indicate.

My brother had an XL175 as well. Great bike. I'm sure that 125 will be a blast.

I would love to see that little thing on nitrous.   ;D ;D ;D

Mike and Sam,

I just got off the phone with Dyno Tune, they make a direct port nitrous kit that would be perfect for the XL125 engine.  It adds 16 HP.  It runs around $350 for the kit.

Somebody stop me.

Okay guys, do you think the turbo will work?  It would be much better than the Nitrous as it works all the time.  If Mike can help me figure this out I'll do it.

Now we're talking about something!

Where can we find a slick for a dirt bike? Who's going to fab a wheelie bar. Group project.

Well forget the turbo for the 125cc.  The 4 stroke exhaust pulses will be too far apart to really produce enough boost to really make the turbo work well.  It would however work well on a 2 stroke.

Dont even go there......this coming from the owner of two two strokes...and have been debating turboing the larger one...

Nice little bike! Great find. It'll make a real nice training bike for new riders in the family should you have any. My first bike after I joined the Army was a little 175 enduro. It topped out at 60mph but it got there pretty fast. Due to my six ft frame I sat pretty far back on the seat and the little bugger was always pulling wheelies on me.

Sparty is a not so happy camper right now.

I went to pick up the XL125 today.  Got to the owners house and she met me outside.  I had the cash in hand and my buddy's pickup truck.  She told me that her husband decided that the price we agreed upon wasn't what he had in mind.  I asked what he had in mind and the price doubled!  Then she told me that they couldn't find the key.  I know that I was visually upset and told her that I would like to talk with her husband.  He was at work but said she would have him call me this evening.  She said that her husband had spoken with a collector and he said that he could get more $$$ for the bike.  Then I said, okay, let me tell you this, I bought a 1972 CB750 in very good and running condition for less than you are now asking for this bike.  And this bike hasn't run in three years and needs work.  Tell your husband that any collector will never pay his new price if the bike isn't running.  Tell your husband not to bother calling me, I am no longer interested since you and your husband can't honor the original deal.

So about a half an hour ago he calls me and wants to talk.  I said, sorry I am no longer interested, I thought that we had a sale but then the price doubles!   You must take me for a fool.  I think that is rotten, so forget it and even if you drop to the original deal, I still don't want the bike after the aggravation you have caused me.  I am not sure which “collector” you spoke with, but he or she has no idea what they are talking about.  Your damn bike doesn’t even run.  And for all I know it may have a blown engine.  How can I be sure you were honest with me from the start?  Good luck selling the bike.  Goodbye.

Man, some people need a slap.

Thanks man.  If this happened to me when I was younger I most likely would have kicked the bike over before I left. :P
