top end gasket set
« on: July 13, 2005, 11:42:29 PM »
Anyone know where's a good place to get a top end set for a 550.  Mine's a 78', but i'm told the other years are the same.  To anyone out there doing a rebuild, DO NOT go for the athena set.  I order a "complete" set for my rebuild and it didn't have the o-rings for oil galleries on the top of the block.  So I tried to find a suitable match and thought I had.  But judging by the oil running down the fins, I guess it didn't seal off like I thought it would. But anyway, back to my original question, I need a place to order a top end set??? Any ideas?? A place in the states would be nice, but i'm open to suggestions elsewhere.

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I rebuilt my CB750k with a full Athena gasket kit and every one of them leaked......The Athena kit was garbage. >:(  I had to pull the engine and replace them all with a Versah Kit, which was execellent. :)
If I can't see the Engine I can't see the point.......

Well, that is fairly good news considering I have a versah kit in the mail as we speak.  I found a top end kit at oldbikebarn.com.  It's a real good website with fair prices.  It only ran me $50 which included shipping.  I was reading an article on replacing the head gaskets on old honda sohc4's and it said an old honda mechanic's trick is to coat the head gasket with three layers of gaskasinch, letting each layer tack and dry before applying the next.  Then bolt everything together and torque down to spec.  Anyone ever try this technique?

I just opened my Vesrah kit I bought 2 years ago and found that it didn't contain the head gasket! (although it says so on the back!) also, the 6 solid round rubber things that go under the valve cover are not included.

I just ordered the missing parts from www.four-shop.de in Hannover, Germany. Some people made bad experiences with this guy but everything worked for me so far. They sell the Athena kits.

Just order a kit from my local Honda dealer today, the only problem I can really see is not being able to ride while I have my wheels apart. :-[
I'll post on how I liked the kit.
