My speed/odometer suddenly crapped out on me the other day. I unscrewed the cable where it enters the gauge-is the metal shaft inside the cable supposed to spin simultaneously with the wheels? It isn't. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Yes, the cable should spin with forward rotation of the front wheel.Disconnect the cable from the wheel. Spin the wheel and look to see that the speedo drive is spinning. If it is, your cable is broke and needs replacing. Common.
