Today's update:

Got the engine on the bench and started pulling things off. So far I've got the top-end in peices. I'm very glad I didn't try to start this thing before doing all of this. It's pretty rough in there.

My goal right now is to get the engine taken all the way down to the case. I'll clean, polish, and paint the case, powdercoat the frame and a few other parts. And while all of that is happening, I'll be checking the internals for wear and possible replacement. I am going to replace the majority of the bolts with allen-head bolts.

I found a couple of threads that had been heli-coiled. So I'm going to have to figure out how to deal with those since the threads looks striped.

Here's where I am today:

The Operating Table

A feeble attempt at keeping everything organized.

I can't wait to crack this open:

Here's a couple of quick shots of the threads. There's about 4 that look like this. They hold the rocker arm assembly to the cylindar head.

That almost looks like a heli-coil.  But, you might want to look for another head if you're going to go through all the trouble of a full rebuild/powder/polish etc.

No point having something like this haunting your soul while spinning the cam at 8000 RPM.

Good point, about how much would one of those run? And does anyone happen to have one?

Also, if I replace the head, what else should I be doing at the same time?

Sorry for the delay in responding here, I've been tied up with other projects. I'd love to take you up on your offer. Just PM me the details :)

As for now, I'm somewhat stalled on taking the engine apart. I've managed to completely mangle a set of philips head bolts holding the main drive to the engine case. I'll post pictures tonight, and my plan of attack.

easy fix,tap the hole to the closest size possible, buy a grade 2 bolt long enough to fill the hole, cut the head off,saw a slot in the bolt, put loctite on the bolt and screw it in and let it dry.either take the head to a machine shop or very carefully drill the bolt out with the correct size drill bit and retap the hole.

I think it's time for a set of easy-outs.
