'78 CB750F Front Wheel Mounting
« on: July 20, 2005, 04:19:04 PM »
After my brother was kind enough to total the front end of my bike a few months back, I now have all the parts needed to repair it back to riding status. I put the new triple tree on and forks/fork ears in, but I can't for the life of me get the front wheel on straight. I never actually touched the wheel/tire and it was never damaged in the accident, but when I bolt it up now, it's always about 1/16th of an inch or so off to one side. Then when I put the brake caliper mount brackets on, each side rubs against the rotor too much to even let the wheel spin.

I've tried playing wi th the fork height, even greatly exagerating them (one up high, the other down low) to try and correct it, butit always seems to be off in the same amount. None of the manuals I have mention anything special you need to do when bolting it back up, and I'm at a loss. I can't see any way to play with the alignment... they just seem to slid into the grove and those fork end caps get bolted on.

Anyone have any ideas? The summer is quickly fading away and I want to ride! Thanks.

you could check the bottom fork tubes to see if they might be slightly bent. Your axle for the tire my be goobered up too.

Check the axle, I think the speedometer gear is keyed and has to be together corecctly or it will push it out of kilter. I had the same problem on a 77F until I discovered the problem.  Good luck

Pardon me if this a dumb question (I'm not a great mechanic)- what's the big deal about taking out the front axle?
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Got me, never did it before. I can if I have too... I was just hoping there was an easier way to check than taking it out.

Make sure the axle is going the correct direction.  I hade mine reversed and the rotor rubbed on the fork leg.  It drovr me crazy.  After a last resort I put the axle in the other way and problem solved.

That's what I thought. But I never took the axle out when I replaced the front end, and I made sure the spedo cable was on the correct side when I put the wheel back on (looked at old photos before the wreck).

I'll have to try pulling the axle this weekend and see if it's bent or not... I really hope it isn't... I want to ride so bad.
