The latest in Cafe Racer wheels!!

You will have to search ..Goldammer Goldmember.. and there will be an article from bikernet...

anyway..drum brake looks with disc brake performance.. handbuilt hubs on 23 " wheels!!

I wish the article went into a little bit more detail on those brakes. That's pretty interesting.

Nothing new under the Sun. Spanish marque Sanglas developed an "in board" disc brake that looked like a drum brake, 30 years ago.

Legend says that Honda copied the idea to Sanglas. As Alejandro de Tomaso said when he was accused of copying Honda in his Benellis, "There is no crime in stealing from a burglar". After all, Sanglas copied DKW and other british designs in their first bikes.....

Raul..was this a single side disc, sort of like a trailer brake??

and what does the CBX 500 use.

These brake pictured were not meant to be sold rather fit the theme of a few custom bike he was building. There is a couple nice shots of the Rotrex blower that propelled that single to 155 mph.. it is actually more efficient (a lot more ) than a Roots type.. Also it shows the front end he designed..has a shockinside the steering neck.

It was a single disc. Two pistons at each side of the hub would press the pad against the inner disc.


As a side note, Goldammer's creations are among my favourite on the "custom chopper" scene. I love those "board trackers" and "tank between tubes" bikes that Goldammer has created.

Sanglas hub had cooling scoops. I wonder how Roger Goldammer has sorted this out.

It has scoops see the bikernet article (info, first post..I am link challenged)..it shows him making them by hand on manual equipment!..I saw him test it at 150mph in Sept..

Man, if I'm planning on going 150+ MPH I don't care what my brakes look like, I just want them to work.

Get a Waterbuffalo 2x TLS front drum.  4 shoes.

Yeah well, looks and nostalgia aside, the Honda brakes (which do look remarkably like those Sanglas brakes) were rubbish, and there were guys here and in Britain doing front end swaps to retro-fit conventional disc brake arrangements back on to their bikes, at the time.

The biggest problem I see with this now is that it's a compromise limited by the size of the disc that you can use. (due to the hub size, which is restricted by the rim dia) Most modern bikes need discs around 12 inches in dia to pull them up with 4 or 6 piston calipers, so to do that with this system you'd need a hub with at least a half an inch all the way around the disc for clearance for disc mounting flanges etc, so the ID of the hub would need to be around 14 inches, then add another inch to the OD of the spoke flanges, and you've got a "hub" around 16 inches in dia, with tiny spokes to lace it up to the 18" or 19" rim.

Of course you can use smaller discs and calipers to reduce hub size (and braking ability) to try to get the aesthetics right, but you will still end up with a massive hub, with massive unsprung weight problems, not to mention serious brake over heating by taking the discs out of the cool air stream that conventional discs normally enjoy.

As far as 4LS brakes go, they were really good in their day against other drum braked bikes, but crap compared to a disc. I had a Suzuki GT750J (first model "water buffalo") with the 4LS brakes at the same time as I had my GS1000S with pretty basic twin disc set up, and the disc braked bike would pull up 30 feet shorter from 60 MPH than the 4LS set up. The 4LS brakes look great, but no good if you've just plowed up the arse of a car fitted with modern brakes. Suzuki changed from 4LS brakes to twin discs with the next model, the GT750K, my all time favorite Buffalo. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Mate, I was as excited as a schoolgirl on prom night when I went to the Bathurst Easter TT races in April 1983 and saw that quirky Honda triple for the first time, they were touted as "RD Killers", and everybody wanted one until after only a few laps they started to drop like flies!

I never saw any in the showroom and don't even know if any were sold here after that, but I do know a guy who owns a mint example here in Oz, he doesn't ride it much, but just enjoys looking at it, they were a pretty bike. Cheers, Terry. ;D
