My dyno guy quit... now what
« on: November 01, 2007, 07:43:16 PM »
I went down to my local Ducati shop. http://www.kissellmotorsports.com/service_request.asp
I am friends with the owner's son and they have a state of the art dyno room.  I also know the dyno tech really well.  Well, Casey (the dyno tech) quit at the beginning of Sept.  I am upset because he really knew his stuff.  Turns out that he is now in Med School.  Good for him, but what about my dyno run in the Spring???  Cody, the owner's son, told me that they have a new dyno tech who is currently in training with DynoJet.  That is all fine and dandy; he will be up to snuff on dyno tuning EFI bikes, but how about a inline bank of four CR carbs on a 1970s engine?  I am worried that he will run and hide when I show up.  Or worse, he will have to pull out a book and use it for reference.

Seriously, who goes to Med school when motorcycles are so much cooler than checking someone for a hernia or enlarged prostate.

Maybe you can get him to come in as a consultant to walk the new guy through it. Might cost some bucks but at least you know the job will be done properly.

Not likely to happen.  I forgot to metion the worst part.  My time on the dyno was going to be FREE!  Casey was really digging my build and said that he would love to get it tuned for me if he could have a spin after the tests.  Now it is looking like it will cost about $200.

Well let's see. For running your motor on the dyno which could take and hour all told, he gets paid by the boss $20 - 30 an hour maybe. Now to do the jiggle and cough along with the KY poke he will get about $100. He can jiggle and poke about 4 people an hour and take in around $400 for the hour.
The average MD gets about $150,000 if he just works for a Hospital. The guy I hang out with who fixes hernias and other assorted problems rakes in $2M. When he is not cutting and sewing, he drives one of his 4 Concours quality 70 Chevelles, or his Indian Larry original chopper. My poor friend doesn't know what he is missing not standing on a cement floor inhaling exhaust.

Art - easy solution...just ride it up to Boston and dyno it here - two benefits of this...you will have the bike warmed up ready for the Dyno and secondly the ride home will be on a super-tuned bike!!  ;D

cheers

Well that is disappointing but hopefully the new tech will be versed in carb circuits Art. If nothing else he'll be able to set the idle and get the main jet right.

Can't disagree there Andy. Stetson is in the top 5% of dyno tuners in the country....carbs or FI.

That's a bummer that your buddy quit, Sparty.  I've got two shops in town with dyno's. One is run by a guy who used to race cb750's and the other has a operator that I like who will also let me be there and assist in tuning. I don't like the idea of dropping off my bike and picking it up a few hundred dollars later with a "here's what you got" so I skip the guy who knows cb750's and take it to Mike at Godspeed.  The way I see it, the dyno operator knows their machine and a lot about bikes in general, and I know more about the ins/outs of my bike than anyone else. Together we get a pretty good run :)

Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Great idea.  I'll see if I can rent a trailer or cargo van and bring it up in the spring.

I think it would be well worth it to get 3 runs and look at the curve and A/F. That is what I do. I then go back and make adjustments as I see fit. I drop the bike off for FI fuel maps as more time and runs are needed. The 3 runs will give you a very good starting point.

Jeez, how many runs does he need to dial it in?  I may have to bring an extra rear tire or two.

As Mike mentions this guy Stetson who is one of the the TOP 5% tuners in the country....if I were you Id want the BEST guy tuning my HOTROD especially after all the effort and money you put it into this bike...at least you can be sure you`ll be getting the best advice and with Mike there (engine builder) you cant go wrong. You`ll surely go home with a well tuned, solidly built HOTROD that runs the best it can...... and if not you leave it up here and Ill ride it down after any issues get sorted out  ;D ;D

See you in the Spring - book early!!

cheers
Andy

Talked to a local guy I know that has a dyno, they finally ran the 06 ZX 10 that was at B'ville.. it ran 155hp the way he ran it on the salt.. and did 108 on the bottle.

He ran 175 on the salt with poor traction, he hopes to get in the 200 club..looks like  he might be able to ...

Mike, you have such a way with words.;D  I will have it dynoed, when it is broken in a bit more.  I haven't been on the bike in well over a week.  We have had heavy rain and low 40s.  This jewel of an engine will never get wet.  That is why I got the XL125.  What can we do to the 125 engine?
