brake light problems
« on: November 01, 2007, 11:01:09 AM »
so i went for a ride with my bro, 2 miles in he signals me to pull over, telling me i have no brake light .

so we pull over to investigate, and found that my brake light works but it is dimmer then the tail light, so i just assume that i have the wires backwards,
so i get back home open it all up switch the wires over, and now the tail light is a little bit dimmer and the brake light does nothing at all ......huh?

also when i swapped the wires my headlight got a little brighter (yet another "huh?")

anyone else have this happen cause i'm at a loss , everything is grounded properly and it works, just not how it should

my brake light switch is oringial 1975 do they cause that when they start to go bad

Check the voltages at the bulb/socket.  If they are say 1, 2 or more volts below BATT, then you likely have a corroded connection somewhere.  Corrosion is resistance and current flowing thru resistance makes for a voltage drop.  Ideally, the only resistance "load" in your lighting circuit should be the filament of the bulb.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

ok so i dug deeper and here is what i found , the PO wired the tail light and the low beam (headlight) together  ??? ::)
witch wasn't that big of a deal i assume ... until i relayed the headlight , witch inturn relayed the taillight (and not the brake light) with explaines why my headlight got brighter.  so knowing this , my first qustion is , why would you run the taillight off the headlight (assumeing there is some sort of reason behind doing this) ,and what would be the best fix

as if this couldn't get any more strange.

i re-ran the wires back to stock no sweat, i check the light and had the same problem again WTF
so i'm looking at the bulb itself while applying the brakes , and i notice that there is one filament lit , and when i hit brakes that same filament gets brighter  ???

so to end this story the tail light housing had a bend in it witch caused it to ground somewhere , anyway i replaced the whole thing and now it works fine .... crazy
