This just might work out
« on: November 02, 2007, 07:11:36 PM »
About a ½ mile from our house is where civilization ends. Beyond Ranch-to-Market Road 685 there are miles and miles of two-lane country roads. They are flat as a board with good straight aways , and a lot of bends with good visibility around the farms.  If I wanted to, I could drive from here to Houston on them and see maybe five other vehicles in that 190-mile stretch. People don’t drive them anymore. There are plenty of good, newer highways nearby.

These roads are where my K0 and I got to know each other today.  I really am beginning to believe this thing between us just might work out. In a 75-mile ride I did not exceed 7,000 rpm – what with it being a fresh rebuild and all – but I popped it up there a few times and the power band beginning at about 5500 shows real promise. It is kicking when I hit 7,000 and there is lot left. It runs well, if not completely dialed in. I would have needed a GPS to guide in any help had it been required, but the bike never gave me any reason for concern. It's pretty sweet.

The carbs still need more adjusting. It sounds kind of like microwave popcorn when it is doing its idle imitation. But it is as good as my K5 off the line, has a reasonable midrange and then…whoo. I can’t wait to feel what the rest of the power band is like.

I actually am anxious to find out what the whole range, properly adjusted, will feel like. I synched the carbs when I got it started, but that was just idling on the center stand. I think now that the parts have gotten to know each other better that retuning and readjusting the carbs will make today seem quite tame.

It may be time to start thinking about paint....

Hey there Patrick, sounds very promising. now how much have you done to the the  engine? or do you just have another 1500 rpms to the stock 8500 redline? Im running a 70/ 836 in my 73K I bought it two years ago for 100 bucks and all Ive done is dyno s and kerker and pods and gaskets (external only) still got a couple leaks but nuttin serious gonna tackle them this winter but after 30 years of running the stocker 73 75s on this frame, this thing is a bear and I love that little extra kick I live up here in Maine and there are plenty of them country roads you speak of. just some of them get a bit rough cause of the winter frost. and speaking of that im gonna be  in the market for an upgrade from the 31 year old shocks . best of luck with your new build, have fun Craig in Maine
seven fifty four ever its not the destination its the journey Ive been collecting these old dinasours for 33 years . they are quite an ICON

Patrick, my stock (to my knowledge) K0 pulls past 10k in 3rd without issue (odd that I can hit real near my bikes top speed in 3rd). It would keep going, if I let it. (Well, I did let it, kinda, now it's broken).
Didn't you say in an earlier post yours is abig bore or something?
7k is where the fun is just beginning to poke it's head out. Wait till 8k. Then 9k.
No.

Yeah, this is an 810 big bore with a hot cam. How hot a cam? No clue.

It does pull like the devil at 7. I'm going to break the engine in some more before I hit the high end of the power range.

I love this part of a rebuild. Validation.

Patrick,

I would be tempted to build a loud, fast, illegal machine
to be used exclusively on one stretch of one of
those two lane roads.
