Dunstall Fairing
« on: May 21, 2007, 05:24:15 AM »
I think this is a Dunstall fairing on this cafe-in-process I'm just diving into and was wondering if anybody else has this fairing and what handlebars and cables work best (Tommaselli or Clubman or??) and will I expect misc controls/cables to foul the fairing at full lock? Where should front signals mount? Do I use stock CB750 20M hl and bolt it onto the fairing w/ a pair of brackets? I could figure this out eventually but anybody thats sorted this stuff out already can help get me on the road alot faster.

Nice fairing. If it is not a Dunstall, then it might be a Dicks Cycle West.

While it is similar, your fairing is not a Dunstall, it is from Dick's Cycle West in California. These were made for Dick and distributed as "Racer 1" fairings. The image below is from their 1976 catalog.

Trying to ID what I actually bought yesterday. The seat has Dick's Cycle West under it but the fairing does not look like the one at the top of this post that has been ID'd as a Dick's.

Hahnda,  your fariring looks like a Rickman - or knockoff. I will have to see the front better to truly tell.  I can just make out a faint line on the front in your photo where a racing version would have a clear bubble mounted.

After a little bit of looking arouns I was kind of thinking that it looked more like a Read-Titan fairing.

You know, it just may be!

It's too ugly for you.  You should send it to me  ;D  It's ok I'll pay the postage...

Where'd you pick it up?  I've been looking for one like it or a Rickman...

I know Airtech/Glass from the past has them.  I've missed out on the last couple ebay auctions on original leftovers.

Hahnda,
You are correct, your fairing is a Read Titan. Contact Gustaffson Plastics in Florida for the nosecone and windscreen. Their website is www.bikescreen.com

Hi Bret, I can't remember who made the Read Titan fairings but the same ones were made for other bikes.
They may have been made by Avon or Bill Jakeman.

I just Googled Avon fairings and you can still buy Kevins fairing in the UK made from the Avon mold.

Sam,
The facts are a little confusing to most people as many of the names have been used universally over the years. Dunstall, Rickman, Avon, Read-Titan, etc. are all names commonly used to describe Cafe fairings.
Paul Dunstall had his fiberglass products manufactured by Reg Curley.
Read Titan was a U.K. based motorcycle performance shop/stockist whose fairings were provided by Churchgate Mouldings.
Avon was a brand name used by Mitchenall Bros. Mouldings. Avon bodywork was used by the Rickman Bros. for their roadrace and motocross kits as well as through a variety of other stockists. Avon fairings were also available as factory options through Triumph and BSA dealers.
The Read Titan (Churchgate) and Rickman/Avon (Mitchenall) nosecone fairings are very similar, but have subtle differences. Being from different manufacturers, the windscreens and nosecones will not interchange.

A little more clarification for anyone interested.
The red and white fairing is an original Read Titan/Churchgate and the all white fairing is an Avon/Rickman/Mitchenall. Each is a clear nosecone type fairing.  The Avon windscreen mounts on the outside of the upper wings and the dash is molded as part of the main body of the fairing.  The Read Titan windscreen mounts to the inside of the upper wings and has a separate dashboard.

Hey Bret, great info here. Love the pictures of the bikes. I really need to figure out what I'm going to do here. I'm using the fairing for sure. The tank is a bit iffy and  I'm not so sure I want this road bike to have a glass tank. I also have a Giuliari seat similar to below but NOS and in white that fits the F frame as another option.

I'm also thinking that the tank that would have originally been on this bike would also look pretty good with the whole combination. Except for the fact that I don't have one.
