Broken Side Cover Tab
« on: January 02, 2007, 01:00:56 AM »
When I came out of the store the right side cover was gone.
The only replacement I could find at the local junkyard was missing a tab. After some tense negotiations the cover was mine for $5.00.

Using a block of wax I created a mold using the the left side cover as a model and attached it to the cover with a little extra melted wax. I then mixed up some Marine-tex, which is an epoxy type repair kit for boats and filled in the mold. After the marine-tex cured I melted the wax mold away with a cigarette lighter and sculpted the tab until it fit into the grommet mount on the bike using my dremel tool. The resulting tab is stronger than the original.

Nice save! This marine-tex should work well on cracked covers?

Do you still have the manufacturer and part number for the Marine-tex?? My local boat shop will order it, but only if they know what, where, who, etc...   ;D

I'll bet that thief has been watching you for weeks...just waiting...   >:(

I built up a tab and filled several cracks on my side covers using JB Weld and a dremel/sandpaper to shape it.  I'm sure it's kinda brittle, but it's held up.

I imagine the marine-tex is more flexible - just throwing another idea out there.

If you have never used Marine-Tex it is great stuff. It is an epoxy based substance. I have found it virtually indestructible and easy to work with. It usually outlasts the part I am repairing. I have repaired cylinder heads with it. Drilled and tapped it and now molded it and formed it. It even cures underwater. I have even used it to make permanent repairs to a hole in my gas tank.
I purchase it at West Marine. Its called marine-tex the mighty repair kit.

#$%* MAN... I hate when that happens!!...
Here's how I've fixed replacememnt side covers for my cb550f and my cb750f...
Why is it that the f models are notorious for cracking and breaking??... I've never had breaking/cracking problems on the side covers with my cb350 or cb450!!...

Anyhow...check it out:
