CB750KO - Who does great OEM candy red painting???
« on: November 06, 2007, 02:55:07 PM »
OK, I can do the mechanical stuff, but when it comes to a great paint job I need the experts.  I am in WI and looking to find information on who can do a real quality job on all the candy red pieces to my KO.  An area body shop said he could do it all for $300.  I see Blake from CA in the vintage mag but hate to mail this stuff to CA.  If any of you had a really great experience please let me know who and about what to spend.  I do want a really nice job and only want to have this done once.  I already have the gold stripes and tank plastic trim.  Thanks for the tips...

I went through the same thing. I'd been looking for someone for almost two years, and saw the same ad for Blake in CA as well as contacted someone in Marietta, OH. The problems I had with both is I couldn't see examples of their work and they couldn't see my parts beforehand. I know someone here in Michigan that does, in my opinion, excellent work, but it still wouldn't be local to you. I found him by accident through another member here, Kevin D. He worked with him and had his 750 done and posted pictures.

The painter was about a hour drive from my home, but I was able to show him the parts, etc. I had the stripes from Reproduction, but as it turned out, they were too long. I've heard that they will work with you if you have a tracing of the original stripe, bit I did not. The painter and I were able to work out a solution, trim them from the front. This left the border pin-striping open so he said he could hand paint one and close it. It's that kind of dialogue you can only have in person. I ended up paying $800 for mine, but how much you pay depends more on how much prep work is needed. One of my fork ears had some rust through pin holes and he leaded them closed and prepped, etc. Also the side covers had been rattle canned black at some point, so those had to be carefully stripped. Having seen Kevin's and I knew he was experienced at doing vintage cars as well, I was comfortable and it's the best $800 I've spent on the bike. The stripes are buried in clear to the point you would think they were painted on. I still can't get over how it looks when I walk into the garage.

I know it's not easy, but try to find someone local if you can.

I agree with Bob, find a local shop if you can. You also run the risk of shipping damage if you go that route. I'd say look for a shop that does car restoration paint jobs. A lot of chain autobody shops won't go near rust or jobs that the customer wants done a certain way. The smaller shops usually get those jobs and are easier to deal with on a personal level. BTW, $300 sounds a bit cheap.

I should have added also, the $800 was strictly for his labor and skill. I supplied the paint (one of Don's kits.. highly recommend this as well).

That is a great price for the paint kits...!
I just painted my tank and I bought a quart of primer...pint of black base coat and a quart of clear...I had hardner for the base, so just needed hardner for the primer and clear...total for that, at jobber cost, was $175!!!!!!! I about choked!!! Like all petro products...paint costs have skyrocketed...a lot of it is enviromental issues as well have driven the cost up too.

Like several others...I had some issues with the reproduction decals...I talked to them several timess...they were nice but no real technical help. I was told that they had so many different decals that they couldn't furnish dimensional data for every one. In this day of computers and such...it would be NO problem for them to store and print that sort of info for the more difficult installs. I makes the difference in a botched job and a happy customer. I was told that I shoudl take it to a PRO and have the job done. Without the correct starting points...a PRO can't do it either!
I finally bought a beat up tank at a swap meet and got exact dimensions for the original stripes...then the Reproduction ones fit perfectly.
With the two piece decals for the 77 it would be IMPOSSIBLE to get them correct and get the stripes to match up properly without EXACT dimmensions to start with...it's that critical.
The final job looks awesome...black pain that looks deep enough to dive into!
It takes a LOT Of time and prep work to get better than factory finishes...so it's going to be expensive if you have a Pro job done. I don't want to think about the amount of time I spent sanding and buffing!!!!

Since I also ran into problems as to correct stripe dimensions, your post gave me an idea. I wonder how difficult it would be, with the help of members having stock tanks, to collect an archive of the stripes and dimensions for future restorers and store it here on the forum in the FAQ area?

Hey Bob...
I have the stock 78 tank...(77/78) are the same.
I'd be glad to take all the measurements...
Not sure how hard some of the earlier ones are to align, but it would be nice to have that info here....

Candy paint, especially on motorcycle parts (they're small) is pretty easy for most body shop guys to paint... for 300 bucks - you won't beat that price.  I just painted both of my projects, and paid almost $200 just for paint.

Where are you located ?  I'm in TX, I have a buddy in ATL that paints as well (he's pretty big time though)
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I am ASE certified painting refinishing. I could tell you the steps for cany apple red.  You want a smooth surface. Then buy thng called intercoat clear. Its a a clear base coat. Gives it a clean slate. Then use pagan gold base coat. Then red base coat , then you mix the pearl after the red and spray that on. two coats is good. Then Clear. Make sure yo dont run clear. If you do then yo have to stripp everything back to bare metal and do a redo. Good luck i am here for questions.
