Cycle World Shows
« on: November 01, 2007, 12:18:55 PM »
http://www.motorcycleshows.com/motorcycleshows/

Anybody been to one of these shows?  They travel all over the country.  It’s in Houston this weekend.  I’ve heard the vendor booths are a little biased toward the leather vest and chaps crowd, but there should be a good display of the new models.

The big attraction to me is the demo rides - Kawasaki, Yamaha and Victory are supposed to have their fleet there.  I really wish Ducati and Triumph would show up, but I’ll take what I can get.  I’m planning to ride down on my 400F – may have to recalibrate my wrist before jumping on a new ZX-14.

I usually go to the Cleveland show.  No demo rides because it's at the end of January.  Cleveland + January = COLD.  I missed last year due to work.

Does anyone attend the Cleveland show?

Went to the D.C. show a couple years ago.
Not too bad.
Billy Lane had a booth.
I don't think he'll make it this year.
Rides: 75 CB750F, 48 Indian Chief, 67 Triumph TR6, 63Honda CA95
          83 XL600R in CB360 Frame

I've been making a habit of the DC show.  Another SOHC/4 old-timer, Bruce Giller, lives down near DC and he and I head in together from his place.  I enjoy the show.

Woke up early – damn time change.  I had about 100 miles of interstate highway travel ahead of me, which doesn’t sound like much but is like a trip to Sturgis on my little 400F.  Last time I rode the bike at high speed the transmission seized up solid on me.

I hooked the trailer up to the wife’s car before I left as an insurance policy.  Gotta say the little bike performed well with highway traffic, but the first few miles at 70 mph were tense as I thought about torque values for every fastener and listened for strange noises.

The show is OK.  A bunch of bikes parked in a convention center.  You can poke, prod and sit on pretty much any new model out there.  I saw all the bikes I wanted to see in about 30 minutes.

I enjoyed the hell out of the demo rides.  They had a good 20 mile loop set up with some highway and some city streets without much traffic.  You couldn’t walk up and do this on brand new $10K bikes anywhere else.  Next year, I’ll probably skip the show and just ride the demos.

Anyway, here’s my take on some current models.  Maybe Cycle World will read this and hire me.

First ride was the Kawasaki Versys:

It felt weird.  Didn’t have much power and the transmission was clunky.  The fairing didn’t do much good either.

Next was the Yamaha Warrior:

First cruiser ride for me.  Took a while to get used to the forward controls, but I like the big twin power band.  This engine in a sportier chassis would be cool – too bad they won’t sell the MT-01 over here.

The Main Event – Kawasaki ZX-14

Holy hell.  The ride leader turned us loose, but I still never got this thing over 8K revs.  Gotta be careful with the first 1/64th degree of rotation on the throttle.  I think I actually traveled through time for a few seconds.  It’s the easiest 100 mph I ever did.

Surprise of the show – Kawasaki Big Ass 2000cc Cruiser

I just got off the ZX-14 when they had an open spot on this thing.  What the hell.  After a few mintes wrestling with it, I finally “got” the whole cruiser thing.  Big floorboards, heel-toe shifter, and a “set it and forget it” transmission.  I lugged this thing in 5th gear from walking speeds.  120 ft-lbs of torque.  I could see owning something like this – makes more sense on the street than a superbike.

Last ride - Yamaha FZ1

Nice ride.  Sit up position with an R1 motor.  Fuel injection was cleaner than the ZX-14.  It sounded like my neighbor’s electric leaf blower though.  Little fairing worked well too.

It has been tradition to go every year for the last 25 or so. May have missed one or two.  I always enjoy it, but there have never been demo rides at the Atlanta show.  We are getting ripped off!!

They have a few good buys (helmet once) and some vintage bikes as well.  Unfortunately Triumph hasn't been there recently.

I go to the NYC one every year...have for the past 6 years? I usually enjoy it, but it seems like every year there are more and more "trinket" vendors...selling electronics, dvd's, just lots of lame crap. Last year some guy who was working the Ducati booth COMPLETELY blew me off too...really pissed me off since i'm a very dedicated Ducati owner. I was asking him serious questions about the 1098 and he just looked right through me and started talking to the people behind me. I was FURIOUS! That sealed the deal, the next week I went to my local Ducati dealership told them what happened and that I would be buying a brand new Triumph Speed Triple instead of a 1098. Done and done...I was having a hard time deciding but that helped me decide I didn't need another sport bike. Love the Speed Triple btw! Oh and a few years ago my father and I spoke to Indian Larry for a good hour because everyone was over at the OCC booth and ignoring his stuff. He had some hilarious stuff to say about the OCC guys. He let me sit on a couple of his bikes on display, lifted up the velvet rope for me :) The picture I have of me sitting on an Indian Larry original with Larry himself standing next to me is a keeper that's for sure.

Lol anyways, fun show but no demo rides in NY either :(

Best part about the New York show is leaving early and going to Red Rock Cafe or Hogs N Heffers w/ the bros afterwards and getting totally %#$@-faced ::)

Lol, well I LOVE my 748/853...and it's one of those "will keep it forever somehow" bikes to me...I get along great on a Ducati message board and with a few friends I ride with that also own Ducati's. But man oh man, being a younger (24) guy, i'm assuming they just figured I wasn't a "serious" customer. I did get a letter of apology from my dealership because I was one of the first on the waiting list for the 1098 tri-color they were getting in and I had them scratch my name right off that list because of it. Went right to the Triumph Dealership and picked up a Speed Triple...too bad the closest one was a couple hours away lol. Never regretted it.

It was an eye opener though, pretty much EVERY other manufacturer was answering anyone and everyones questions, taking everyone seriously. What I was wondering, is how many other people were snuffed, even if it was by that one guy working at the booth. This was no communication error or anything either. I'm a very laid back guy, but things like that...gar...In hindsight it was probably for the better since the Speed Triple is probably the most fun bike i've ever owned, short of the Derbi GPR 50cc two stroke I had for a couple years.

Either way, i'm going to the show again this year with my father and 2 friends. Taking the train to Penn Station and hoofing it to the Convention Center same as every year. If any SOHC4 Forum members are gonna be there drop me a line, i'll be there on friday the 28th of december pretty much all day. Gotta make the train fare worth while after all lol.

I used to hang around a bit with a guy that has a few Ducati's

but I heard a few things that put me off

Like I said XXX XXX is getting a Ducati Monster, he says XXX XXX!! WHAT does he want with a Ducati so I says, Hes got 6 bikes, gues he wanted a Duck.....whatever.. like they decide who can ride one LMFAO

Other stuff too . life is too short to listen to that carp...

I like the bikes they are great, just not the be all/end all for the world...
