gas cap thumb latch 72 cb500
« on: November 07, 2007, 11:52:20 AM »
trying to find a new thumb latch for a 72 cb500 gas tank (no key). I just bought a nice looking tank but it came with a broken latch. Ive been trying to find this small part without any luck. If anyone has a lead I'd appreciate it.  Thanks

The thumb latch was superseded due to them popping open in crashes.  Your only hope is probably ebay.

Yipes! I guess my latch doesn't look as bad as I thought.

Previous poster was correct as Honda supply only the locking type, which is a 400 four part but fits all the external cap sohc 4 and any key (or screwdriver) fits

I sorta hate to admit,
but...along time ago, mine did that.

I somehow drilled out the end of the pin, that the latch catches ( Dont remember how i drilled but may have held the headed end with vise grips or pliers) To open cap I push down taking pressure off the pin and pull it out..usually hold in my teeth while refilling..put it on the bike you will loose it.
Fill your tank insert pin push latch forward press cap down till it catches.. done.. crude but works... and looks like it is still ok..

I have one of those latches somewhere on my workbench.  PM me with shipping info and it is yours.  Do you need the spring and pin too?
