any easy way to fix leaking oil?
« on: November 07, 2007, 10:13:47 PM »
I have a 77 400f with the oh-so-common oil seeping out of the engine, right near the exhaust. Seems to be only on the left side. It's not bad yet, my leg is clean after a 20 mile ride. But I can look down and see it on the case. I did a little bit of searching, but with came up with a few different answers. One of them that it wasn't easy to get rid of it. Would new gaskets fix this? Is there something I can do. I wanna do some engine work this winter and would like a leak proof engine, at least for a year or two. Any help would be great!

Dustin, a new gasket probably would fix the leak but you could try and re torque the head down and see will that help stop the leak first. I have a new Honda gasket/seals on my 400, it’s been on a year and no leak from the head yet.

I was figuring on the new headgasket, I just wasn't sure if it was an issue where the spots where the metal meets has warped over time because of heat or something. I think I may even have oil leaking where the cylinder meets the case. I'm not sure, kind of messy, I'm gonna dig into it more if it stays dry out today.

Thanks for the advice Dave. I don't have a torque bar right now, so I don't wanna strip anything out, but I do have a sears credit card, hah!
