First spill-now scratching my head!
« on: November 09, 2007, 11:43:18 AM »
Howdy guys and gals I just picked up on this site and was hoping to get some feedback from you regarding all things SOHC. To get to the point i had my first spill on my 74' CB750 last weekend and I'm still trying to figure out how it happened! I was cruising around that day in 2nd gear and decided to head home, I downshifted to first at a light and then on the last drag shifted back into 2nd. About 5 seconds later I'm jumping off the moto doing a barrel roll down the street. I look up and my bike is lying on its left side with the horn wailing out! After checking to see If I was ok just a bruised torso I was able to pick the bike back up. I was looking to see if there was any damage just little stuff like smashed turn signals a scrape on the tank but my stator casing got really smashed up definetly cracked cause its leaking oil out of it, bad. Can anyone suggest any possible causes why I spilled plus I'm now in the market for  a early cb750 stator cover and casing too. Hooray for winter builds! LOL

Is this a serious question? Did you grab a handful of front brake for some reason? Did the tranny lock up? Really need some more info...also, you were cruising around in 2nd gear ALL DAY?! I'm confused lol. Glad to hear you are OK though.

Sorry I wasnt too clear on this and yeh it's a serious question.  So I riding home in 2nd gear for about 20 minutes and I'm not sure if the tranny locked up while in gear but I had to roll the bike back into neutral once picked up. Also, is it common for oil to leak out of the stator casing if it was cracked...? Like I said it happened so suddenly but I think the back wheel just locked up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yup, if its cracked it will leak. The 750's stator hangs way out there.  If you drop it, it will crack.

Does the tranny shift?  Theres not much to go wrong in the gears itself without a prior warning.  Can you kick the engine (no spark, leave the keys out)?  If so, do the pistons move like they should (look through he spark plug holes)?  OK, no broken cam chain.  If your chain oiled up?  In neutral, w/ the bike on the center stand, can you rotate the rear wheel freely w/ minimal resistance?  That's about what I can think up right now....

Why were you riding in 2nd gear for so long?  I think your bike got tired of being in 2nd and pitched you out of spite.

Did you feel it pull one way or the other?  Or hear anything?  Or feel anything odd?  Run through gravel or sand?  What RPM were you running in all that 2nd gear riding?

i'm thinking the tranny locked up or a loss of traction going from 1st to 2nd

Yes I can kick the engine (that's how I got it home after the spill) but I first had to roll it back and forth to get me into neutral. My rpms were running a bit high about 2500 at idle at full temp. The back end was feeling a little bit soggy around corners too, filled it to max psi but it didnt make much a diffrence. I also had oil spilling up over the battery and down the left cover when it was put on it's left side would this be normal? Now if the tranny locked what would be the cause of that?

Cheers

Oil downt he left side is because you don't have a drain tube connected to the overflow of the oil tank...ask me how I know....:D

Sounds like you need rear shocks pretty bad, but that's another story.
I don't know what air pressure you had, but I personally don't think those bikes like the high air pressure that many new bike dealers are used to recommending.
Why is your idle so high?
Is the tranny or whatever leaking all the time? Do you have oil on the tire?
Did the bike go out from under you as if you hit an oil slick or wet leaves, or did it actually lock up as in sudden STOP.
Did you check for a loose nut behind the handlebars?

I was going around a turn at maybe 8 mph and the bike just went out from under me.  I searched the road and found nothing.  Sh*t happens...
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!
