Well, this guy must be a Carpy fan because he has a set of Carpy's gauge faces.

Some people seem to think that the cafe racer style were started by Carpy. He's being put on a pedestal by some. Don't get me wrong I like some of his bikes but come on. If you see him walking on water, it's only because he knows where the rocks are!

Off in the distance, can you hear it? The death knell of the cafe fad is ringing loud and clear! The final nail in the coffin will be next season's new episode of American Chopper where the OCC boys (sans Vinnie) will be working on Sr's new project: "Project Checkmate"...an SOHC 750 Honda with custom checkered paint to benefit the Chess & Checker Players of America Memorial Foundation™.  ;)

I'm just saving my money so that I can jump on a few of those half-finished cafe projects when they come up for sale on Craigslist after the shine has gone off the penny.

i don't think the cafe thing is going away anytime soon...i get more and more people asking me about building them as time goes on.....

IMO Carpy is popular because he has built some great bikes, has a variety of styles, and more importantly a good website that is easy to find.  Lets be honest, this bike might not be the best example of a cafe, but it is better than a large percent of the bikes I see around Denver that people are trying to call cafe's....just search craigs list for cafe...its really silly what some people are doing right now...putting some clubman's and pod filters on a bike and calling it a cafe is just silly...

Moreover, emulation is a high form a flattery...even when it falls short a little...to the general public this bike would be something new and different, even if we know exactly where it came from.....

As a builder and someone who really like old jap bikes,  I hope we get more people building/wanting bikes like this and increasing interest in old metric bikes in general...it may increase the price we see for buying project bikes, but it will also raise the price of bikes we build.....sure there will be some flops but there will also be some really new and interesting builds to admire...

It's not so much that they drove it in the ground so much, but that the average guy couldn't afford one even if he did want one. IMO guy's like Carpy are doing the same thing to the price of the average cafe style bike, and that's what he's selling now is just average stuff, but his "NAME" seems to be worth something to some. I've seen to many bikes on here that IMO would put Carpy's to shame. "Sparty's" is the first to come to mind.

Cafebob - What does a bike have to have to be considered a cafe style bike?? You put the comment out that everybody that puts pods and clubman bar aren't a cafe racer so what is. Did the guys back in the 60's all know what a cafe bike needed and they all could afford it. I don't think to many put rectangular Aluimun rear swing arms on and dual disc brakes up front, but we call theirs cafe racer. Help me out here, I don't want to call mine a cafe style bike if it's not!!

I think at the heart of the cafe racer is the idea of making your bike faster, lighter and more nimble than the next guys.  If you look around at the old british cafe bikes they weren't just cosmetic they were put together to gain the maximum in performance.  There could be any number of bits and pieces from all sorts of bikes to make their creations.  It just so happens that the style that comes out of that need for speed is the "cafe" look.  I really enjoy looking at Carpy's bikes he definitely has an artistic eye and most of his bikes have amazing detail.  But for me when I think of Honda cafe bikes I think of the ones built at Ohio Cafe Racer.

To each his own if you like the style then go with it and enjoy your creation.  I'm building a cafe bike and I can say that it will not have the word "Cafe" anywhere on it; I know what my bike is.  I want my bike to be fast, light and a reflection of my own personal tastes.

IMO..FWIW..

Swede has described (quite well) chopper and bobber..

But MY take on cafe is this..

Stripped down and often hopped up bike made to ..EMULATE "The LOOK" of a roadracing type bike.. hence the

LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNGGGGG

Tanks & shrt Seats, bars rearsets etc..

That and some of the boys prefer to ride solo.. not to be confused with so low as in my bike..

I found a café and rider from the days of the rockers at this years TT ….best café I have ever seen I just loved the patina, the guy must have been riding it all his life…bloody fantastic and what a bike! Replicas are just a retro thing, not the real deal IMO.  ;)

i always thought the "cafe" designation was originally a bit of a jab at guys who wanted the look of a real racer, but were only going from "cafe to cafe." in any case, i personally love the look of road race track bikes (especially 1950's through the '70's). if you're really looking for performance, you'll probably end up in this direction anyway, as function at high speed is what dictates much of the style anyway (low bars, long tanks, rearsets, etc.). i can certainly appreciate good aesthetics when well done, but IMO eye candy is eye candy. the whole "ton up boys" bit get a bit cheezy if you ask me, but then again most fashion for the sake of fashion annoys me. Now thats more like it Dave 400! Thats what I think of when I think of cafe bikes....I met a few of these guys in Oxfordshire and they have usually had the same bike since they started (and same leather jacket!).

Who will still be here in 10 years time and what will YOU be riding  ;)
