I NEED HELP WITH WHEELS....Please?
« on: November 13, 2007, 08:05:15 pm »
Does anyone have any information that could help me figure out how to swap the mag wheels on my 78 supersport, to spokes? I know that I must be missing something, this should be easy.....right? I could order some Excel rims and have them laced up....but what about the rear hub? Can I get a used wheel and make it work somehow????
I have what I think is going to be a really great looking bike, even though it is a supersport, with a real unique look. The mag wheels just wont look right in my mind!

Wow! You're right, that is an awesome looking paint scheme.

You should be able to purchase complete wheels for a song on feebay.
Everything you need should be available almost all the time.
If you are planning on lacing up fancy alloy hoops then just search for hubs.
They are cheaper to ship because of reduced size & weight.
I just purchased a CB550 rear hub for just that reason and it was only $25.00

Good hunting

Disc brake is your issue...You maybe have to sap to a rear drum.  Do some searhcing on the forum, I know that some have done it.

Thanks guys, I think that the rear disc is the real issue. I would rather not switch to the rear drum, even though it looks great, the saftey of the disc is hard to give up!? I see all kinds of stuff on ebay, but I just dont know what will work?
The frame, swing arm, lower fork tubes, and other stuff have just been freshly powder coated black.Since it is a supersport, the motor is black, and I just think black wheels with stainless spokes would just set the whole thing off! The tank, fender, seat, and side covers look even better now that there is clear on them. I debated getting some Gulf Oil decals to place on the bike before the clear was layed down...?I have black clubman bars and black headlight brackets.
I will continue to search and dig, I know that there is a way to do this.Carpy put spokes on a yellow SS that he built on his site,I will try to email him again and see if he has any info for me.
Thanks again,
Dave

the rear mag on the rear is wider then the spoked hub if you kept your 78 swing arm it would be just a matter of spacing it up for alignment of the chain. I went the other way 76 froam but wanted mads. I had to swap out the swing arm also the mag is too wide for the 75-76 swing arm.

The 78 front discs wont fit an earlier wheel and the earlier complete wheel, with single disc, needs the earlier forks and caliper.
Back in the 70's here in UK there was a firm who made alloy discs that you could bolt onto the hub after you dissasembled the Honda Comstars, if that is what you have, and had spoke holes to lace a standard rim, could probably be made by a machine shop with an indexing head but pricey
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

As Bryan mentioned you are going to have issues with your front wheel.  The bolt pattern for the rotors on your Comstar front is different than standard 750, so your rotors won't bolt up to a spoked hub. Spoked K model style rotor(s) are too big in diameter, too thick and have the wrong offset to work/line up with the calipers on your F2/F3 front end.  MRieck made it work on his CB but it took a good bit of machining.  You might ask him what the process was.

easiest solution: '76 F swingarm and rear wheel, and K0-6 forks and front wheel.
