Thinking about picking up this 1981 Shadow
« on: November 28, 2007, 12:11:27 PM »
Don't really know why, just seemed like a decent deal and I can't stop myself from leafing through classifieds.  This 1981 shadow popped up about 80 miles away from me.  Owner wants to trade it for a Nintendo Wii, which I should be able to dig up for about $350

Here's the info I have -

"1981 Honda Shadow for Wii
Will need as far as I know, spark plugs and battery. Also you will have to get a salvage title

It was on the road a year ago. I honestly don't know anything about what's wrong with it other then the spark plugs and battery. It will also need a key and a salvage title. You are more then welcome to come look at it.
 "
Was the title ever in your name?

"it was in my dads name, he gave it to our old neighbors who were evicted and gave it back to us a year ago. We are not sure if they ever transferred it to their name our not. However if it is still in my dads name that would be easier I assume."

"It has been outside but under the garage eves so it hasn't been touched by weather like it would have been sitting out in it per say. And I just got off with the court house, it isn't in my dads name anymore :( However we can still get a salvage title on it. "

Any idea how the tires are?  I'm trying to decide if there is any chance that I'll be able to get the bike running and ride it home or if I'm definetly going to have to borrow a truck and haul it down.

"in chick terms tires look low on air but we have an air compressor. as far as driving it home, your guess is as good as mine lol. I will take close ups of the tires and anything else you give me a list of "

Pics will be up in a few minutes

I like the slightly later model shadows better personally...my brother had an 83? maybe an 85? Actually he had several...couple of 750's and a 500...

That one doesn't look bad for the price though. Especially if you could get it running that quick...

Thats the trick.  I don't have a truck to go get it, so I'd either have to scramble and borrow or rent one, or get lucky and do a tune up in her driveway and have someone tell me how to bypass the key, and it's not right down the road.  I should probably just go ahead and pull the triggers on some new tires for my 550, and start getting stuff together to make sure the suspension and everything are good.  For some reason I can't resist looking for great deals, when I really don't have the time or money to go get them.

Still torn.

That isnt a shadow.  It is a CM or CT 400.  From the calipers I would say a 82.  Shadows are V twin. Dont know there first year but they where  out by 83.
There are some pics of them in some threads here.  Do a search.
Either seller doesnt know what he has or its a scam.  Might still be worth it if its legit.

Hey I think you're right...did some looking around on the net this morning and it looks like the first year was '83 for the Shadow.

yea, the stamp on the front forks says 1981, I'm guessing a ct400.

So, should I bother picking up this ct400 for the cost a wii?

Non runner with slavage title I would say no.  It does look in good shape though.  It would be a gamble in my book.  There are a few guys here with them maybe they will show up with $.02.
