Anyone remember these bikes?
« on: November 11, 2007, 07:12:50 pm »
1st one,
Owned by Mel Mandel, think it was a Red 69.. did about everything you could imagine.. had a Ceriani fork, turbo I think, just done right up..it was a really cool bike back then.
I think he may have had a store called Superbyke maybe..and may have put a hot Suzuki in it in later years..

2nd one,
Rocky Cycle I think sponsored a CB 750 dirt tracker, had a Champion frame.. what a cool little ride..

Anyonr eremember them??..... off to look for info..

Great collection, 754!

I remember it well. I think I was just reciting the story to Moto-Bunny: I worked in a Honda shop (Spring Honda, Elmhurst, IL), and could not get a CB750 to save my soul. I even paid a "holding fee", while being an employee, and got bumped in the delivery order by customers who paid more. When I reached $250 "down" (3rd raise-to-reserve attempt), and the manager still sold the next incoming 750 to someone else, I got pissed and went to a competitive shop (Mannheim Honda) and "got in line" there. That only took a week, as someone else bailed out on his order, and I got my K1. When I rode it back to my employer's shop the next day, the service manager started a general attack on me, via the other mechanics, for being "unfaithful" to the shop. The next day, after working late, I came out to find the shift lever missing from my bike. I walked back into the shop and demanded a new one from the owner, who took one from stock for me. I also demanded my last paycheck, right there. He didn't want me to quit, but I told him what was going on, and I was through with it. A few days later he called to ask me to come back, that he had fired the service manager and put several other mechanics "on notice", but I told him sorry, I was going to head up the Honda shop in Pekin, IL the following week, which I did.

After I had been there several months, and had gotten into the racing thing in midstate IL, I got to be friends with the Honda rep (midstate) and tried to get Honda to do something under warranty about the miswelded frame on my K1: the rear wheel was nearly 3/4" off to one side (left, I think it was) because the right frame loop was out of position at the lower attachments. Honda could not even come close to matching the huge demand for the bikes then (prices had rocketed from $1295 for the K0 in 1969 to $1695 by now, August 1970, I paid $1750 for the K2), and they were completely uninterested in replacing my obviously defective frame. I needed a better ride for the track work, so they arranged for me to get one of the very first shipment of K2 bikes, which I immediately bought. It was fun: a brand new (brown metalflake) color, quieter, better handling, smoother,...everywhere I went, it was like it was all starting over again, with people crowding around to see the latest 750. It was well before the K2 appeared in dealer's shops, so for a while it was real notoriety! Such were the heady days of this bike.

As far as I'm concerned, it never really ended.  ;)

When the bike was anounced in the UK, I was off to Reads with deposit in hand.

I lived in London at the time and, had a transport cafe in East London on the main road to Dagenham.

About 95% of my coustomers were contractors driving in and out of the Ford plant at Dagenham.

About a month before the CB was due to arrive, the Ford workers went on strike for some reason or other.

I had no income for three weeks and had to close down.

I went to Reads to see if I could get my deposit back. The answer was no and I came away with a Honda P50 ;D ;D ;D the one with the engine in the back wheel.  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

A buddy bought one new, still has it..parked for a long time.

I just never seem to see or hear of them!1 When I rounded up some NOS parts to put on a sandcast in about 99 I got a brand new Candy Garnet headlight ear, in plastic with paper tag and I looked at it and said, I hope they find another and dont paint this one..

Sam.. that is a bummer..what a drag..

 Great stories..eh..

 When I was about 14, I got a ride on a GOLD 70 or 71 CB750..changed my life..

Mad Mel had a few articles written about his CB750 back in the 70's. It satrted out as a very early sandcast (#800 something) and he kept hopping it up constantly; turbos, chrome, paint, wheels, everything possible. When the motor reached its limits, he swapped-in a GS1150 motor.

I was sort of embarrassed at first: a brown motorcycle? It grew on me later.

I still like that color cuz you never see it and it reminds me of my buddys bike when I met him in 74.. he went to glass tank later and repaint.. and he had them knarly headers all twisted in front of the motor!! ...can never remember who built them..AAA maybe, probably got them from Racecrafters..

Action Fours made a set that looked like you barely missed a sideways collision with a fire hydrant: are those the ones you're speaking of? I think the reasoning for the design was "equal length pipes to the header collector".

I hated those: when customers put them on, they always ended up bringing the bikes in for oil changes so WE had to take off the pipes to replace the filter.  :-\

But, in retrospect, I got pretty good at taking off the pipes.
