oil gauge: before I buy...
« on: November 14, 2007, 03:47:16 pm »
I thought I'd feel out my options.  Should I get a pressure or temperature gauge?  Those of you who have them, or better yet, have had experience with both, which do you prefer?  Advantages/disadvantages to either?  I imagine there are kits available to mount these gauges in plug-hole on the engine case, but I also had the idea of mounting the gauge in the cockpit (with the rest of my gauges) and I don't know too much yet about running hose/line from the engine case to the cockpit without issues, and an electrical temperature gauge seems to be my best option.  Also, what temp./pressure range should I be looking for when choosing a gauge?  I'm hoping for a 2" diameter gauge, so any good source reccomendations would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance, and I've keep updates going with the progress.

I would recommend the pressure gauge that plugs into the oil galley. Not sure where else you would plug it in without tapping or running an unsightly line.

I agree on the pressure gauge. That is the most critical element of the two in my opinion. Also, I use mine as sort of a passive temperature gauge. Normally, after getting the engine up to running temp at say 70-90F air temps it runs about 10 lbs. per 1,000 rpm. If gets lower than 10 lbs. it's getting hot. Conversely, today it was only 53F when I was riding and at 3,000 rpm it was running 55 lbs.

You could probably take oit your oil pressure lightswitch and run a line up to you other guages.. I think I would trust the pressure guage over a light that tells you "Its too Late!!"

I remember seeing, recently, someone who had run a line from the oil gallery up to thge other gauges so the oil pressure gage was with the others. (For the life of me I can't remember where or who). They made it dress with a braided steel line and it didn't look too awful.

Wish I could remember where that picture was...

That's exactly what I want to do.  But I'm curious, what did you use for the line from the oil galley to the cockpit?  All soft line?  Combination of hard and soft?

idea of dimensions of the hose?  oil-resistant, but how about ID/OD?  I'm wondering if I would be able to find stainless steel braided oil-resistant hose out there.  I'm curious how the oil pressure is affected by such a long, soft hose (not worried about it adversely affecting the engine so much, but rather the reading on the gauge.)
