Triple tree swap - CB400f
« on: November 15, 2007, 06:05:16 PM »
I am curious and want to know can I use a different triple tree on a 400?  Why, you may ask?  Possibly a larger diameter fork.  I just want to know if it can be done.  How do I determine what will fit?

Thanks

I put a VF500F Interceptor front end on my CB400F roadrace bike (37mm forks).  Direct bolt in.  Check with the guys at All Balls racing if you will need special head bearings.  The tubes were about 3" too long, so I ended up having them shortened, but everything else was gravy.

Generally when you want to swap front ends on bikes, you want to use the steering stem that matches the frame and the triple clamps that match the forks.  Sometimes you get lucky and the forks from a different model from the same manufacturer will use the same steering stem.

Good news about the Interceptor front.  Another option is the CB450 or 500T steering stem has the same offset as the 400F at 60mm so the steering geometry remains the same. Then you have different options for 35mm forks the 450/500T or 500/550fours or even 750 items. Then if you lace up an 18" rim to a 500/550/750 hub the possibility of adding larger dual discs becomes easier as well.

I just finished installing a 2001 Yamaha R6 front end on my CB550F frame. Can't say if it will work out for a CB400F but give it a look.

Not a straight bolt on though.

Good luck

Aside from physically lining the parts up, how can I determine if mismatched parts will work?

Say like a late model cbr600?

oh, and thanks for the other info...ebay is your friend ;D

Measure everything, and measure it twice! Then when you think you have all the measurements to ensure a fit. Try it! You’ll find that you’ve missed something and you’ll just have to work it out.

Have you searched through all the info on this site? Surely someone has swapped out the front end of a CB400F. I know that 750essess has swapped out a CBR600 front end on his CB750. Shoot him a PM and ask if he has the dimensions of his fitment.
