In that case you are going to have to keep on going down!

Remove cam and head

Remove cylinders and check bores for pickup and small ends for tightness---I seen one in 30 years siezes and never found out why!

Well, the hell with it then.  I didn't buy that new cylinder hone for nothing ;).  I started pulling things apart today.  I had to stop just before I got to the fun part, trying to break a cylider head free that is 35 years stuck. :-[

I started ganking on the head and low and behold, the cylinders released before the head did.  Is this going to be a problem?

Frequently happens and even if it dont look like it the base gasket is usually moved enough to leak, which is why i say pull the cylinders if you remove the head!

You need to split the head off to remove the cam chain cushion,
? did you remove the two 10mm head bolts (1 at front & 1 at rear of camchain tunnel)

I was using the worthless manual and it only said to 'loosen' the bolt, and it only mentionsed the one at the rear.
