Just removed the cylinder head on my '76 CB550
« on: November 15, 2007, 08:46:28 am »
So I planned on doing a top end gasket job on my motor, but I'm thinking it may need more work than that now that I saw this. Does this look normal for 21,000 miles?

If you are worried about the carbon deposits...don't.  Does look like you might be running too rich, or doing a LOT of idling with a dirty air filter.

Cylinder wall condition it what is important.  Scratches?  Grooves?  bad.

Thanks TwoTired. I'm going to try to get all the carbon off tonight. What's a good method for that?

#2 and #3 cylinders look/feel smooth. Had to leave for work right after I pulled the head off, so I didn't have time to turn the crank and check the other 2 cylinders. Will check tonight though.

If it dont come off with a brass wire brush leave it.

Use all new gaskets, O rings and rubber bits

Most of the carbon should come off with some spray carb cleaner and a green Scotch-Brite pad.

The CB550 tended to run rich at idle for ease of starting and smooth idling.

I wouldn't recomend leaving any carbon if your cleaning it up, little bump of it can cause a hot spot to form during combustion, and make sure you get all the peaces cleaned out before reassembly 8)
