Reassembling carbs - Question on choke
« on: November 12, 2007, 06:06:36 AM »
750 K8
After the full tear down for cleaning and reassembly, it cam timer to put the choke plates back on.As the plates were set in originally, the bolts had been flanged out to prevent them from coming loose and being sucked into the engine, right? Made them a little harder to get out. NOW, as I am ready to put them back in, some of them are not willing to re-thread. In fact, I could only get one of two in each plate. (See Pic)

Should I toss all of these screws and get new one? Would I be able to get new ones? Is there any hope in saving the ones that I have that are buggered up?

Yes you need new use loctite AND peen the ends, probably help if you ran a tap through the threads to clean them up as well

If you could only put back one screw per choke plate... my guess is that they don't line up.
The reason I say this is because I had the same problem when I reassembled my carbs recently. It turned out that the rubber/aluminum hoses(tubes) that connect the individual carbs together are not of the same length ( at least on mine ). One of them is longer ( if memory serves me right, it's the one between the #2 and #3 carbs ) After swapping the tubes around, I got the holes on the choke plates to line up perfectly with the choke link where they screw in...

Just my 2 cents... see if this helps.

The holes line up just fine (as you can see in the picture). It's just that the threads are buggered a bit.

Thanks, Steve for the links.

Whats the best way to peen over the screws?

If the threads are buggered I would chase the threads with a tap and use some red loctite on them. Peening means you need to get to the back of them and turn the screw into a rivet. i am not sure you can get to the back of them now. I don;t think they get much fuel on them so loctite would work.

Well, I got them replaced and thread-locked in. I was just wondering if there is a trick to peening the ends. Might as well do it right. I don't need one of these suckers coming loose and getting sucked into the engine.
