Cb400F - Carb leak after bike knocked over
« on: December 10, 2007, 08:48:04 PM »
Hello

Great site.  My CB400F was recently knocked over by an SUV in a secure parking lot.  There was some damage but it can all be repaired.  The bike did develop a leak from the #1 carb right after the incident.  I thought maybe the float was stuck so I took off the bottom off the carb to see but the float was moving as it should.  The bike only really leaks when sitting with the petcock in ON position.  Any ideas?

Also, what kind of spark plugs are you guys using on the 75 cb400f?  The manual says NGK D-8ESL but maybe there are better ones.

did you verify the float was unstuck by moving it w/ your finger because that will give you a false sense of security... my guess is the float is really stuck afterall.

yes, I did verify just by moving it up and down with my finger.  How should I have checked it?

Thanks

hi prospect... often times its not really the float that is stuck either, it is the float pin.  if the carb is still flooding there's really only one or two  options, stuck float or maybe a worn pin but, since you weren't having trouble before its probably not that.  also, when carbs get in positions like you describe often times the sediment at the bottom of the bowl gets into where the pin is supposed to seat.

my recommendation is just clean the crap out of that passageway and it should clear up.  oh, and while your at it... clean the rest of your carbs  ;)
