I know its a DOHC but........
« on: August 29, 2008, 01:42:26 PM »
Ok, I just finished my cb550 cafe a little while ago with the help of many of you.  Now for the next project.  My dads got a 1981 cb750 custom (DOHC), and wants me to cafe it out.  My question is, has anyone done this.  The whole shape of the bike is different than the sohc, with the front sitting higher than the back, but can it be done without much cutting and welding (as my skills in this area are lacking).  Any advice or pictures would help.  Thanks ???

The "custom" style bikes I think are a bit harder to do tastefully. As with the standard bikes it is rather easy to turn them into whatever you want (more neutral stance) and the stance of the custom style bikes is a bit harder but not impossible to make into a "cafe".

I however have no idea of what you want to turn the bike into. So all I can really give is opinion but I would say more work with this bike. You got to learn how to cut and weld sometime :)

   This pretty much sums it up.   76' CB592 cafe. 69 750 project, 03 CBR954, 75 750 super sport.

Of course this is only my own opinion (in my world that translates to near Gospel proportions ;D) all you need to do is consider what is, in essence, a Cafe. It's a stripped down bike made to perform better than stock- a hot rod really.

It doesn't have to be British or (again IMO) even have the ubiquitous clubman bars! Just as not all true sports cars have fold down wind 'screens' and Lucas electrics a Cafe is the result- not the means. OK, not sure if that last bit makes sense but hopefully I make a valid point. Sure, there's a certain aesthetic to consider.  But, cool is also found in originality.

After you build whatever you want just take it out and blast from one Star bucks to the next (about 30 feet probably) and you can tell the snobs to piss off: it's a Cafe Racer!

My brother-in-law is making an 81 CB750 into a cafe over the winter.  All you need is desire, and the rest will fall into place.  ;)

Wouldnt start with the C version of the 750 which is more likely to have a higher trail angle  = slower steering = not sporty. Not really sure about this, you might want to check specs before going for it

Does your brother in law have any pics of the bike.  Has he started yet?  Does anyone have any pictures of a custom turned cafe.  I really want to build this thing but I havent seen any finished and just wondering what others had done with them.
