That's crazy for the mileage, but my F1 with 568 miles on it cost $5500 and my brother's '74 550 with 23 miles on it cost $4700.

Now THOSE were survivors.  This guy watched too many eBay auctions.

For that bike, I'd give two to three, but you gotta figure, it's all dependent on area.  There are NO old bikes down here, so they run a premium.  Plus, those "three-figure" bikes are never original, they've been bastardized somehow and will cost a lot to get right.  I'm an originality and factory purist.

My cb350f for 100 bucks
My SR 175 for 160 bucks
My cb350t for free.

Never, ever, ever seen one anywhere near 6 grand.

Granted it was a 125, but I was GIVEN a mint condition '80 CB125S with 380 miles in 1990.

And then there's the old car sales saying: "There's an @ss for every seat".  Meaning that if this waits long enough, some fool will pay his price!!

A first year low mileage version. Always command a premium. Sandcast ring a bell? If Honda started to make the cases sandcast in 1973 an 1974 the K3s and K4s would be avoided like the plague. The cases add proof of an early model and therefore coveted. That they had teething issues and further reduced their numbers only helps the rarity factor.  First out usually garners the attention.

Watch eBay when the restored or survivor 1973 Z1s show up. Those are real big bucks.

But the K3 eBay guy above has been watching too many auctions without realizing why some are desirable. Or he's trolling for suckahs.

and we complain when our bikes become actual collectibles why?

i see no reason why these coveted machines (look at our site for proof) can't go for 6,000+.  look at many of the muscle cars of the late 60's early 70's and what they are going for now.

and who ever said 17,000 miles was a lot?  i think the 26,000 my cb350f has could be a lot more if the previous owners had stepped up to the plate... i'm working off their debt though, don't you worry  ;)

I saw that one. It was real pretty. I could spend six grand on my 550 and make it almost that pretty.

Too bad the old man didn't keep the box, eh? Then we could really see a silly price!

Happy trails.

Those are the exception, not the rule.  Plus, even if a bike IS found that cheap, best case, it's not gonna be too original; worse case, it'll be beat up, rusty and tired.  For better or worse, THAT'S what people are paying the money for, originality.

Pretty original, but for the pipes.

Bad paint job, dented tank, and wrong pipes.

But not bad.

Both ran.

If someone pays 7 grand for a 73, they are effin nuts. These aren't rare brit and italian scoots, they are one of the most common motorcycles ever made.
Well, maybe not the 350f, but yeah, you get my drift.

No, I agree on 7K for a K3, but I scour craigslist, eBay, Cycletrader and others and the days of sub-$1000 Honda fours that are in Good shape or better are gone, with RARE exception.

Your bikes, (which are very nice BTW), in those conditions are $1000 bikes now (give or take).  Period.  If I could find running three-digit bikes like that, I'd snatch 'em up all day.  Usually the three-digit bikes nowadays have major issues like no title, wrecked, rusty, smokes, missing vital parts, etc.

I'd rather pay more up front for an example with all the parts and needing next to nothing because it's REAL easy to get upside down in a restoration.  They're usually cheaper to buy already in awesome shape than to buy a cheapo that needs work and put it in awesome shape.

Plus, it's regional.  Some places are awash in old Hondas.  I happen to be stuck in Harley/Sportbike country.  The vintage bike scene here is about a vibrant and alive as Richard Nixon's corpse.  So when one DOES pop up, it commands insane prices.

I don't get why some people here get so upset about rising prices on our beautiful bikes.

Most of us have spent a lot of time and money restoring, maintaining and even customizing our bikes, yet we've suffered from horribly low resale values for many years, while prices on other marques have risen.  Why do some people here have a problem with our investment coming back to us?  Don't you guys even like your Hondas?  Don't you see why our Hondas are WORTH more than similar vintage HDs or old, unreliable, British junk (yes, I've owned some)?

It is about time that these bikes were recognized for the beautiful, comfortable, practical, rideable, well designed, reliable pieces of history that they are.  These bikes changed the motorcycling world in a positive way.  They raised the bar on design and reliability for all of the other manufacturers.

They are fun to ride, without being pretentious.  You can wear a full-face helmet without worrying about "looking cool".  You don't need to look like a "boy racer" either.  You can ride a Honda anywhere without people thinking that you are a jerk or that you are "trying too hard".  You can even ride your Honda in a suit on your way to a nice dinner, or to work, without looking or feeling ridiculous.  Now that they are classics, you can do all that with style, too.

For me the rise in the price of the bikes has the added feature of also causing all the prices of parts to rise accordingly. Notice the increase of prices over the last two years alone. Pieces that are in concours or close to concours condition are commanding very high premiums. Take front fenders for example. The K2 down fronts (not the straight-cut sandcast) can still be had NOS so the price is stable there. However the K3 up versions were in the $40 to $70 range. This was an excellent fender that would show as very close to new. The same item today is in the $140-$190 range. I've watched at least 5 or so on eBay over the last 4 months. Used exhausts that would fetch $125-$175 a few years ago are now getting in the $400 (and up) range.

I do agree with GroovieGhoulie that to get a bike as complete as possible is the best method. But if the rare parts need replacement - then you have not gained much, but to have a spare part in nicer condition.

I think the main separation is defining the camps. Those that use their bikes as daily basic transportation cannot understand the insanity of chasing the elusive, but needed parts for a stock restoration. Or those that customize, whether cafe, chopper - or any other variant. And the restorers keep searching for the cache of mint but cheap...... affordable parts. ;D

And the old saw "Whatever the market will bear" is the true defining element. Someone pays $6500 for a nice K3 then a precedent is set and it seems that it becomes the accepted norm. If one doesn't pay, they don't play. Shame, but a fact of the free market system.

See, I straddle the line; I use my bikes as daily riders, yet will still chase down the elusive original factory parts so they will be 100% accurate just as they were back in the day.  I like the thought of having a daily rider that I could, on a whim, pull into a vintage car/bike show that I just happen to be riding by, and pick up a "survivor" award.  Like, maintaining my daily rider as a "museum piece".

Probably anathema to most folks here, but there you have it for me.

Hats off!!!! I'd love to be able to use as a daily driver, but the carpooling of my own family negates that option. Maybe once a week for work, otherwise the weekends and evenings are the bike times. And for me nearly factory correct is the best mix for me. All carry the later 1977/78 17 inch rear wheel for example. And on a K1 I'm doing now has K2 ears employed, stripped of the chrome. I am using a K3 up wiring harness for the starter interlock and daytime marker lights and that allows for the annoying signal buzzer. ;D  However the smaller reflectors are employed to keep it close....
Also note the amber emblems - a better contrast with the blue. So true resto - nope.

Yep, $6300 is a fair price for a mint CB750 like that, Honda's not making any more of them, so the price is only gonna go up. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Looks like my $200 for my 78 750k8 was a bargain. Got about $900 invested in it now and probably maybe $1100 by winter's end.

You all seem to have forgotten another reason the prices have gone up. Gas prices. People want better economy and a cycle is a good choice plus much more fun than any prius. Not everyone wants a new bike and so get a used. It is a well known how rock solid the hondas are. Sure it sucks that we cant get cheap bikes anymore but those of you with multiple bikes cannot #$%*. I have ONE cb and thats it. With prices going up, I cant afford another cb. So those of you who have more than 1 cant say anything. YOu already have more than one and so are less affected than those of use with only 1 as we can only gets parts now off ebay and junk yards.
