Don't the dams mess with their pilgrimage to salmon mecca?

Often times there are ladders built next to the dams to allow the fish to traverse them. Very interesting.

Since we've become more aware of our impact on nature we have done things to decrease it.  The thing is, you have to consider what the world would be like without any of our tampering.  Those little fish use up basically their entire energy reserve to make it upstream.  Now we're adding additional obstacles to their daunting task... obstacles that would have never entered the equation of nearly impossible factors.

this is only one, but its a big one... 8)

The Elwha flows out of the mountainous heart of Olympic National Park to the Strait of Juan de Fuca in Puget Sound. It once supported six species of Pacific salmon and steelhead and has been the home of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe since time immemorial. Dismantling the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams will allow the river to flow freely for the first time in 100 years, restoring over 70 miles of salmon and steelhead habitat. At 210 feet tall, Glines Canyon Dam will be the tallest dam ever removed. American Rivers helped secure more than $50 million in federal funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for Elwha River restoration. Dam removal began Sept. 17, 2011, and is targeted for completion within 3 years.

Its amazing it took us this long to do this,we need to keep doing it,they need to do it on the east coast,The Connecticut river used to be one of the largest salmon runs in the country, but thanks to dams and G.E. there is none anymore, but they are trying to bring back the salmon on the east coast. But if I suspect correctly and the Republicans take over, that project will be scrapped.

Chums!!!!  bad eating but great fighters. even when near death they'll pull like a train.

Nothing as gnarley as a 'gatored out' chum. All full of chum cum and roe.

Hatcheries have flooded the ocean with those things for the Japanese 'caviar' markets.  Most of the carcass gets dumped even though it's illegal for the fishing boat to do it.

They started making pet food out of some of it at Excursion Inlet, a big barge parks in the inlet and makes a stink for most of the chum run now. Not sure if they're still doing it.

I've caught dog salmon when half their body was deteriorated but they still managed to actually bite and pull. At that point the thought of eating them was pretty gross!

Yeah that Elwa Damn issue has been around for over ten years and they finally started dismantling the thing. It's a new level of moving at the speed of government.

Hey Fly I thought you were headed for the land of sunshine and cactus?
