SPECIALITY BLOG/RESTORE SECTION?? More relevant TECH forum?
« on: November 25, 2007, 11:43:06 AM »
It seems to me that the SOHC tech forum is getting a little overrun with non-SOHC technical items....threads like "CB750 ringtones", "grab a glass of good whisky, relax and enjoy" and "turkey, turkey" while all very "interesting" really have nothing to do with the question "How do I fix/maintain my SOHC motorcycle". For someone checking in for the first time or for those looking for SOHC info this is a lot of stuff to wade through to find the info you really want. How about going back to keeping TECH technical and OPEN forum for everything else? I know the mods do a great job of trying to separate threads but the members should be trying as well  ;)

Also there are a number of very good "build threads" now ongoing, some here, some there, some have past... but wouldnt it be better and more focused to have a BLOG/BUILD section of the Forum for members to record their painstaking creative work and have it archived in a relevant place?  Remember Dougs CB550 build from last year? I do but I cant find the thread anymore is one example.....lost somewhere in the archives.....

Anyway just a few Sunday afternoon thoughts when I should really be working...and yes I DID go for a ride this morning....set off in 30F temps and came back a few hours later and it was 43F  ;D Nice!

cheers
Andy

I totally understand, but that is mostly the result of things not being posted in the Open section. You can only have so many categories before people stop looking at them.

I totally agree with you andy750, however you have fallen into the same trap and posted in the Tech section instead of the Open  ;)

Guilty as charged.

I should make a better effort to visit the open forum too.

Second the suggestion for a build/projects forum though.

A project/build forum section sounds like a no-brainer to me.

+1, I think we have enough members here to ensure that all posts get attention, even If there are more sections. I've done the wading though the arcives bit too, and given up and just posted.

Well this forum has grown by orders of magnitude. It may be time to have specialized content. 4000+ members is a pretty big group.

your right i can't find it either . although i agree there could be another section, i think ultamitly it will just create more work for the mods ,.................... maybe if it had it's own NEW mod (just a thought)

The first thing I tend to hit is the "Show unread posts since last visit"

I agree there should be a build section. The amount of pictures in build threads is seriously helpful to those of us just starting our own builds. On the other hand, for those of us who are new to this type of stuff, when we make our build thread, we tend to have a lot of questions. Most of which would be better answered in the tech forum, but do we want to have those questions asked in seperate threads?

I would use a separate build forum.  In fact it would be easier to find and view my thread as it gets buried here.

I post technical questions/issues in separate threads anyway.

Variations of this idea have been brought up in the past and have never resulted in a change. I've always been in favor of a sohc tech forum AND a sohc general forum. The old Greenspun forum had that arrangement. Maybe it's time to look at it again though because more and more I open the sohc/4Bikes forum, scroll down the page and barely recognize a lot of the threads as being technical...or even remotely sohc oriented.

You could argue that we should self-police our postings but I think that it's already being done by the people who are going to do it. Others just aren't inclined to do so...Perhaps reporting posts to the Mods would help out, they can't possibly be on top of everything, but that wouldn't be so necessary if there were separate forums.

I think a separate build/restore forum is a good idea too. A place to report on the progress of your work and answer questions directly related to it. Any tech questions you might have about your project could go in the tech forum where they would be more likely to be seen/answered. You could then link to that thread in your build/restore thread if you thought it was relevant.

I agree with the blog/restore section being a good idea.

I will be using a thread to document my upcoming teardown and work on my 78 F.  If I have specific questions I can post them to the tech forum, and answers I  can link to or include in my thread.

It would be great if this thread was in it's own build/restore forum... and not in the general tech one.
