Sure, I had to open a whole new can of worms.  :)  I'll be more specific, Farnsworth made the first electronic television not using mechanical parts to recreate a picture.  He also made a camera of sorts that would view the picture to be displayed on the TV.  Granted there were others who had ideas before him and improvements after him, but the father of the electronic television was Farnsworth (the village was kind enough to continues raising his child after that) ;) .

Sorry chaps I must disagree.....John Logie Baird (a fellow Scot  ;D) was the founder of television...I thought everyone knew that  ::)

Geez, if it wasn't invented in America, how the hell does it work?  ??? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Seriously, a Scot is nothing more than a Paddy in a catholic school girls plaid skirt ;) .  Reread, "first electronic television".  Bairds design was replaced by something that worked.  The mechanical design would not be capable of larger images with good resolution.  Thanks our lucky stars that an American was there to make the technological leap necessary for me to be able to watch the Packers each Sunday.  And for the record, I am part Scottish as well.   Though I could be even more regional and point out that it was a western American that developed the electronic television and not some Nor'Eastern WASP snob.  :)

Well, I've proded the snake, lets see if he'll strike. :)

Well you have to have the idea in the first place for someone else to improve it.....thats why its called invention  ;) ;D You see, thats what Scottish people are good at  - innovation and inventing...I said nothing about taking it to the next level.....we are too busy thinking up the next great thing.....like penicillin or the like..... ;D

EVERYONE wants to be Scottish (and every woman wants a REAL Scotsman  ;)) ....being only "PART" just makes you a mutt  :D 8)

WOWOWOW... I just read all 9 pages of this train wreck... people get quite excited about politics... I will keep my opinions to myself as I would be sure to ruffles feathers here.

The best part was when I read Ed ask(all flustered) .. Andy are you a Dr. .... HAHAHA.. I fell off my seat for that.  Especially because I know the answer and saw that Andy didn't even respond to it. 8) 8)

In conclusion....

;D Thanks for the info Upperlake - I never knew about this guy but good to know and something to discuss with my colleagues....as you will have seen no doubt...

Sir Alexander Fleming (6 August 1881 – 11 March 1955) was a Scottish biologist and pharmacologist. Fleming published many articles on bacteriology, immunology, and chemotherapy. His best-known achievements are the discovery of the enzyme lysozyme in 1922 and isolation of the antibiotic substance penicillin from the fungus Penicillium notatum in 1928, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 with Florey and Chain.[1]

Nobel Prize for his contribution to Medicine ;D ....and discovery of lysozyme is HUGE!!!  ;D ;D

Here is a more balanced view incorporating both Upperlakes and my links....

Bobby, did you forget that I was born and raised in the Bronx?  Maybe only a couple miles from Scarsdale, but WORLDS APART!  Without getting into personal details, poverty and welfare are not foreign to me.  I am very proud of what I have accomplished from humble beginnings, and I certainly have nothing to feel guilty about.  I also don't begrudge you your obviously privileged upbringing.  There's nothing wrong with that, either.  Just don't go preaching about how tough it is to be poor, rich boy.

Hopefully soon we'll have a nice warm day and go for a ride.  Maybe we could meet up at Nathan's on Central Ave?  I used to flip hot-dogs there when I was 14.  Some of the best memories of my life are of working there and at Caldor's next door.  I used to take the bus up from the Bronx with all the Puerto Rican girls.  Life was a lot less complicated then, more fun, actually.  There's not much to worry about when you've got nothing to lose.

Bobby, I truly think we'll have a lot to talk about, and a lot of fun.  I suspect we won't be talking much about politics, though.  Is Cookie's on Central Ave. still around?  What about that little bar next door to the Harley dealer in Hartsdale?  Hey, I know, we could meet at the P&K's on 22 in Eastchester.
No Ed I remember. I too was born in the South Bronx and spent up to the age of 12 1 block from the Edenwald Projects. My old man worked on the A Bomb during WWII. He was getting peanuts working for Columbia. He went to do research in private industry and after a few patents, he made some money. So, in a sense I led a double life one in which I thought every elevator was supposed to smell like pee and the other fairly comfortable. I also worked at Caldors, S Klein, and Lafayette. The old man insisted that the money in my pocket was money I earned.  He bought me my first car for $50.00 and he showed me the tool boxes. The rules were simple, when it runs you drive it, when it doesn't you walk. Yeah we could meet up down on Central when it warms up. That would be about the mid point, or Eastchester. Yes life was less complicated then. Then it got real complicated quickly.

Yeah Mate, it was a golden time down by public housing. Life was simple. You simply needed to fight for your lunch money or be able to run fast if the odds were not in your favor. Hitting Junkies with water balloons to ruin their nod was great fun.

However I still think we need to reform Health care in the U.S. We baby boomers outnumber every other voting block in the Country and we are getting fed up. The politicos and their lobbyists will not stand a chance when the spirit of the Sixties rises again.

Yeah mate, you're dead right, all Republican "I'm allright Jack, so fuuck you" bullshiite aside, noone can convince me that there's something wrong with taxpayer funded free basic healthcare, in taxpayer funded hospitals.

I was horrified to see that Uncle Ernie is getting a 900 bucks a month disability pension, then giving it (and more) back to pay for medicine? What a ridiculous situation! By contrast, here in Oz, anyone who has a disability is entitled to free (taxpayer funded) medicine.

My niece, who died from Cystic Fibrosis at age 18, was on a huge quantities of drugs all her life, she ate pills like other kids eat candy, and as miserable as her situation was, at least her mother (her father took off when she was only little) didn't have to struggle to get her the treatment that she needed, and she spent most of her time in the Royal Childrens Hospital here in Melbourne, once again, a taxpayer funded hospital, but one of the best in the world.

I don't want anybody here thinking that I'm taking a cheap shot at the US, I'm just saying that for a country so wealthy, it's hard to understand why there's so much opposition to taxpayers money being used to look after the health of American people? It's a funny world, for sure! ;D

The US is not truly wealthy T1, we have had a great run at making sure everyone else had less and their money was worth less but that grip is slipping now.  We borrowed the money and spent it, now the rest of the world is looking to cash us in.  We are in trouble here in this bubble.   Goverment does one thing well " spend money it will never have."

Man, I only wish the spirit of the sixties would rise up again...  My generation is so damn apathetic!  Where are the mass marches sponsored by university activists?  Where are the crowds of people who all agree that something is wrong and who realize that standing around complaining isn't gonna do #$%*?

Unfortunately something I've noticed is that the "spirit of the sixties" has disappeared behind the curtain of Christian fundamentalism and conservative groupthink.  I'm afraid that the progressively vocal youth of the sixties and seventies has become the conservatively vocal middle-agers of today.  :(

That is so true, we're not that wealthy anymore.  We've been farming out manufacturing our stuff to other countries for quite some time now.  It's those countries that are gaining the wealth.  And then we're throwing money away in Iraq.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

That's because most of the country's wealth is held by like 3% of it's population....You are either EXTREMELY Wealthy or just gettin by...or worse!

Actually, Terry, the whole $900 goes back to the goernment to pay them back because I made $12K a year for 2 years.  I wasn't allowed to make more than $900 a month.  Sometimes it looks to me as thought the government itself discourages people from getting out of the hole- noe especially laziness (or whatever).  That's why I've sold so much on Ebaay- the government isn't monitoring that yet. (I wonder if they monitor this site... :P ??? ::))

The '60's... the National Guard also fired on protesting university students.
Dogs attacked civil rights marchers.  People burned their neighborhoods in frustration and anger.  Several top leaders of our country got shot to death.  The whole time I was wearing elephant bells, big industry was grinding un, undisturbed.  And war is still good for business.  Former hippies and activists send unemotional checks to charities so they don't have to feel guilty about being comfortable and middle / upperclass.  Let's face it- it's hard to go back out into the cold when your joints ache.

Not having any kids, I don't get why they let their 30yo kids live with them, though.  Those are the people who got trophies just for showing up, and they'll soon be inheriting the ploitical world.  The industrial and financial world is gradually leaving this country.  I have a felling in 25-50 years, China will be having stuff made here because it will be cheaper.
50 years ago, "Made In Japan" meant "cheap junk".
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

"Those Canadians"??? lol...

Being in Saskatchewan you know how bloody cold it can get in the winter! There is nothing else to do but sit around and think stuff up so we aren't so much creative and industrial but rather snow bound and bored! (Gotta keep those Americans thinking how cold it is up here! Otherwise they may just invade us too...we're no Iraq but we do have the Alberta oil fields)...lol...just kidding boys!!!
