Tool??
« on: November 26, 2007, 10:56:09 PM »
What's the tool called that I should look for that removes the front wheel bearing retainer ring. The retainer ring has 4 slots 90 degrees apart. Any thoughts on the best place to get one? I'd sure like my replacement to look MUCH better than the one I hacked off.

The tool I use looks like a piece of flatbar ground to fit nice in 2 of the grooves..just a titch smaller than the threads.

Then you either weld or bolt a bar across the top of that or use an 18 in crescent wrench on it, to turn it.

Drill out any peen marks.

In the process of doing this myself at the moment and have what's probably a stupid question...

Do the bearing retainer rings have standard or reverse threads?

Do a search in the old threads. Easier way to improvise is to use a bar, drill two holes at the right distance, and two bolts on them.

For bicycles, I think its called a pin spanner, but it has two pins not four.

I have the Honda tool for the clutch but got it many years ago. I made a wheel bearing retainer tool from stuff lying around that works OK, but a few months ago I was in a Snap-On truck and they have quite a selection of 4-tooth sockets that would be perfect if the correct size is available (I didn't have measurements and don't really need one).
SO if you want a really sweet looking tool for this, try calling in a Snap-On or MAC truck (or whatever your favorite mechanic's tool company is) and ask what they have. If you're driving past a repair shop and see the tool truck there,  just ask the guy to have a look. They don't mind making extra money.

I ordered 2 of the factory tools about a year ago. They weren't discontinued but I haven't seen them yet. I'll have to check into it as I forgot I even ordered them. ::)

I use them for the crank axle. The pins are very easy to break and very hard to find.

I can't find these tools in the Snap-On web site, but I saw them in the truck... hmmm.
They might be called castle nut wrenches, I did find soem Kowa Seiki ones that seem unavailable in the USA but easy to find in the UK... hmmm.

Maybe this one?  Even has a Honda part number.  Mentions for use on CR rear wheel barings.

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

The back retainer has the 4 circular holes like this one but I can't verify the fit.
The front has 4 slots.

My shop manual has the Honda tool numbers if anyone can source them.

07910-3230101  The diagram shows a T handle with 2 round pins on the bottom bar. Must be rear

07910-2830000  The diagram shows what appears to be a socket without a look at the bottom square/rectangular pegs.

They are both described as Retainer Wrench only
