Any Other /5 BEEMER OWNERS HERE?
« on: November 27, 2007, 09:10:00 AM »
I picked up a non running 70 R60/5 about three months ago. After some of the usual fixes, carbs ,tires controls, electricals etc got it road worthy.I stopped at a owner of many bmw 's Home.I have ridden by his house many times and admired the 5 or 6 bikes in his garage.Anyway i picked his brain for beemer ins and outs.He comes over to my house to check out my lastest project(60/5) I find out it has a 71 r/75 motor,HU? Seems somewhere down the line a p.o took a r60 and r75 and put together what i now own.I really am not to concerned if numbers dont match.

Any other Airheads on this forum.

I havent given up on my Honda's. Just thought the BMW was REALLY TOO COOL TO PASS ON.

The R75 with that tank is one of the all-time greats.
A go anywhere, do anything bike with one of the most comfortable seats ever made.  Great ergonomics.

Have always liked 'em, but none have ever "come my way" like the other bikes.
Maybe I need to take the initiative.?

I've always wanted an old /2 for my collection...  Sure Harleys have a recognizable sound (which is slowly going away with the introduction of the Jap cruisers), but a /2 with that Beemer insignia, everyone knows what you're riding!

I have a bunch of airhead friends, but haven't gone there myself yet.

Matt at boxerworks is a great fellow.  He had a booth set up at Barber.  They have a website also -boxerworks.com.  He might be able to help with parts if you ever need any.

He has a beard and glasses. -That's him not wearing the Honda hat.

I had a '70 or '71 r75, wonderful bike, 4 speed if I recall. Big flywheel made the bike feel like it was torquing sideways when you got on it off the line.
I've had a '82 r100rs (/7) that I truely love for the past 3 or 4 seasons. It has about 15000 on it, but I have to do some front suspension work and perhaps pushrod seals  this winter. I've had it naked for the last bit, but am going to reinstall the fairing for next season.
Good luck with your /5, it'll probably keep running as long as you do!

All best,
Ben

the beemer is my stepmom's... she and dad went to cali in the blizzard last year to pick it up.  runs great and they've had some good runs w/ it and the ural.  they also have 2 gs1100... one is the early 90's pd w/ the gawd awful turqouise and white paint, the other is a similar vintage but a respectable dark red.  :D

the yamaha you see in the pic is an 86 srx6... only allowed in the states one year.  it's a torquey, kick start only, 600cc thumper.  2 carbs, 2 into 1 exhaust.  very cool indeed.  and guess what... my girlfriend traded her 98 vfr 800 to dad for the srx6.  the 115 pound girl is much more at home on the srx and her 88ex500 than on the huge viffer.  sure is nice keeping it in the family  ;)

Ya know Heff I was watching Long Way Down with my brother in law, and we were just remarking about the sad lack of options we have in the states versus what is available over in Europe and the UK.

That thumper looks much like what Ewan's wife was riding...

Dammit, send us more options!  Not everyone in America wants to ride plastic covered death machines or "American steel" lookalikes!

here's one i was always fond of...

only allowed in the states one or two years... similar outcome to the cb350f... too small for the stateside buying public

btw... this is also a cb400f  ;)
