Favorite spray lube?
« on: November 27, 2007, 06:29:10 pm »
I've seen the virtues of different spray lubes hashed and rehashed, and wondered if there ever was a poll.  Search didn't reveal it's location to me....

List what you like and why...esp if it is not in my poll.  If there is overwhelming evidence I missed a popular brand, I'll add it.

I like WD-40, Yield (got it at an employer, $8 per can), Marvel.  I like the dry teflon for some things...locks, for one.

I'm sure that everyone has seen Harbor Freights spray can maker.  Dad used to use diesel in it as a spray lube.

This is, BTW, for general use spray lubes, not chain lubes.  Penetrating oil, so to speak.  Hinge desqueaker.  That sort of thing.

'Other' because I use the Scottoiler with appropriate weight oil.

WD-40 as a penetrating oil and Wal Mart brand white grease as a general lube. I usually buy Liquid Wrench in the jugs instead of the spray can...

Do you dab the liquid wrench on with a small brush or eye dropper?

Usually soak the rusted parts in it or use a spray bottle.

Super lube, used in on my outboard that lived on the back of my sailboat for 5 years and it potected it 100% in the ocean water.
These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

Oooops, sorry; thought this was another chain lube thread...hence my response. Can't say I've ever used a spray on lube. I've used 3-in-1 oil out of the can many times over the years.

Really???  I can't seem to live without it.  I was at Godfather's pizza the other day, the screaming door hinges was driving me nuts.  I had a can of Marvel in the bus, so I sprayed the hinges and closers...ahhhhhhhhhh silent doors now.  Squirt a little here, there, all around the square, saying catch me if you can, don't slip!!

I would say there is no universal spray lube. I would guess they fall into general categories. WD-40 is mainly kerosene and some light oil which is fine. The chain lube I use I guess is a Hypoid Oil with some other stuff in it. The Silicones are really good rubber and things like window slides where you don't want dirt to collect. I had needed some lube quick for a door hinge that was driving me crazy on a business trip. Only thing I could find was some kind of a Dollar store. Found some spray lube made in China of course. It smells dead on like Kroil and did a great job.

Dad had some spray Kroil that worked wonders on his POS rustbucket we changed the engine on.  I use spray LPS3 on my chain.

Knock Er Loose is my all time favorite, but I can't find it any more.  Now I keep WD40 around but I don't think it penetrates into rusty bolts/nuts like Knock Er Loose.  On my motorcycles, I rarely need a penetrating oil to loosen anything.  That happens more under old truck suspensions and beds or around machinery.

i tried a different one today that a friend gave me. it was in a package with the oil additives he got for his older car. from a company called duralube, i'm impressed with the stuff, better than wd-40 in my opinion. i used it when i cleaned my pistols this evening. http://www.duralube.com/Products.aspx about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way down the page.

Lubricant: Super Lube
Penetrant: CRC Freeze-Off or Cycle Break-Away

BTW, there is a thread on these forums about penetrating oils that I found referenced numerous other places online: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=20131.0

I'm going to try the acetone/ATF mix since I have a half gallon can of acetone that I haven't had a use for in a long while.

I put pb blaster in because right now I am mostly taking things apart. It is the best for penetrating and breaking things loose. WD40 would be my selection as the multi purpose lube.

PB blaster is insane stuff... It works great as a penetrating lube and dissolving packing peanuts out of a part you got from eBay.  Down side is it has a strong scent  :-\

WD-40 has a great property and I use it for which it was originally intended... as a Water Displacement spray for electrical connections.

My favorite all around for general use, breaking things free, oiling, preserving...

Break Free.... with teflon added to it.

Works fine on guns.

For my bike's chain I use 85-95 Weight Gear Oil.

I have a small pump style oil dispenser in which I keep a mixture of motor oil and Marvel Mystery oil.  Does wonders on lots of things.  I beat on a disk brake rotor today with a heavy hammer trying to get it off the Toyota.  Wasn't budging, so I got out the oil can and squirted the mixture around the hub and in the holes where the lug bolts come through the disk.  One whack with a lighter machine hammer and it was loose!  Maybe WD40 would do the same, but I kind of doubt it.

Love this stuff.  Used it on the door lock of the house recently.  The keys would barley go in.  And when they did, it was hard to turn.  It is just so slickery now.

Too many cans of spray stuff in the garage to pick a favorite.  Depends on the application as to which one I grab.

PB blaster to bust a nut (loose)
Boeshield to prevent rust/corrosion
Marvel goes down spark plug holes
CRC Cutting oil for (duh) cutting
Silicone for rubber
Gunk wire dryer for electrical
WD-40 to clean and displace water
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

ever hear of something called "thrust" ? it's made by Castle products. Lubricates better than wd-40, but not as good a penetrating oil as  pb. blaster.

Gibbs is the best stuff I've ever used! Breakfree CLP comes in second, I buy both spray and bottle.

Gibbs is a lot harder to find in my area.  I've only found it at gun shows.  May have to break down and buy some online.
