Amazing parts list resource
« on: November 28, 2007, 07:03:12 PM »
This is pretty strange and amazing, and it probably won't work for long.
For XP (and maybe Vista) users only:
Click:
Start
All Programs
Accessories
Communications
Remote Desktop Connection

Open "options" and the "experience" tab, set your connection speed. You can check "desktop background" but it doesn't do much for you.
click options<<

Type in the IP address 69.213.66.54

click Connect

The little book icon at top left gets you into the fiche archive. Select the brand (I guess Honda?) and you get a model drop list. Open your model.
this brings up the fiche index page, double click a title to see the sheet. I can't find a way to zoom the image.

Once you select a fiche page you can click on the F8 button (or use F8...) and you get a parts list with the required amounts for various models and probably some "not available" tags, this may or may not be current Honda USA or Canada parts availability.

Cool, then it should stay working for a while  :)
This was emailed to me by a Honda four fan, he didn't explain where it came from or didn't know.

Bodi,

The Service Honda fiche system is really great. I've used it religiously for quite some time. I just go to www.ServiceHonda.com. I checked your method but my XP Home must not be setup for remote connection since that option wasn't available. For all you guys that can't get in via Bodi's method I've always done the following:

1. www.ServiceHonda.com
2. click on Genuine OEM Parts Finder
3. next page under "To Connect Via Your Browser" click on "If you meet the requirements CLICK HERE to begin"
4. click on connect - if unable to access this button you need to change security settings
                            Tools (at top)
                            Internet Options
                            Security
                            Custom level
Enable or Prompt for each/all active X controls (not sure if only 1 will do)
                            OK
                            OK
                            Refresh
5. click on the little book top left and have fun

I don't worry about my security setting because my WinXP changes these MF'ing settings back @#$%^ on it's own. Probably my Norton's 360 software doing me an unwanted favor.

One of the features I like beside looking at the fiches and part numbers is the Search function. I use this to cross reference parts to see what other models use the same part.

Only downside for me is the fact that you can not determine whether the part is still available from Honda. I get that info from Bike Bandit, get the part number from Service Honda's fiche, then order online from Service Honda. They source the same Honda warehouses and it works great. I will say that Service Honda gives a 30% discount on net orders too.

I cut up a microfiche some years back and put the bits in glass slide mounts - I worked with audiovisual stuff and we did a lot of slide mounting but I don't know if these things are even still made. Then I could use a slide projector and blow them up plenty large. Slide projectors are now almost unobtainable (except for ebay of course). Video and computers have made slides obsolete, it seems.
How many sheets/panes are on the fiche? Our library has a machine that will print pages, it would cost a bit but you'd have a hard copy.

I took my microfiche to the library. The lady at the smaller local branch didn't know what a microfiche reader/printer was. I had to go to another branch to print them. 133 pages. That was the best and most handy resource I had until I found my official Honda parts catalogue on EBay a month ago

I bought a good used microfiche reader for $25 a few years ago since I had quite a few partsfiche. This guy had about fifty of these old readers in stock, maybe it's not to late to pick one up cheap locally.

This is not a Service Honda site, although it accesses the same parts fiches. It is locally hosted on an Ameritech broadband connection somewhere outside Chicago. Probably some guy's shop or something.

You are right! But it's definitely being run off someone's DSL account in the Chicago area. Wonder why they're not hosting it professionally... =)
