Have you had the head off the motor yet Jim ?

If the motor has not been run and has a ported head with oversize valves, I would hang on to it.

It might even have a decent cam in it.

Hey Sam

I havent had a chance to check the bore to piston clearance yet
The cam is stock
The head is ported but can tell as of yet about the valves of there over size or not
I am not going to assume anything anymore about this engine.
I will pull an exhaust and an intake and check them.

you think that its still a good deal to split the differance with the money and keep it?

well see.................................... :( :-[ :-X :-\

Maybe you should price out an 836 kit from Wiseco, and price out getting 3 mm bored out of  all 4 holes, before you start figuring out how much you should get back...

hey my 2 cents...

ported head
836 kit
bored cylinder head
Ti retainers + springs means it probably has a cam

provided the parts are good even a 500$ is a great deal

yo could ebay it out for more than that.

if you get 100$ back its a really good deal....

but it all depends, if you aren't happy it will never be a good deal.

Exactly,
Allow 100 bux for an engine core.

Take an 836 plus boring at 550 divided in half.

Take at least 100 for a used ported head or more plus something for the valve job, springs, etc.

You getting the idea??

Tihis is of course providing it is relatively clean and hopefully fairly gresh..

Add it up it dont take long..be reasonable.. maybe he has/knows where there is more..

Stainless valves? 33.5mm intakes? Ported head (depends on quality). Ti retainers. HD springs. Try pricing out a rebuilt ported head with big valves, HD springs, Ti retainers. Much more than the $500 for the whole thing.

How about convincing him to throw in all his brothers stuff and $100 back to boot?

My question for him would be: did he know this and try to con you? He seemed to present himself knowledgable about the bike in his advertising. My next question for him would be: why the hell did he think he needed a wheelie bar for what you found inside?  :D Part of the con or is he "less than intelligent". Anyway, these questions don't matter as long as he shows up and works with you.

Yeah Jim, 500 bucks for an 836cc engine in reasonable condition is still a bargain, so don't be too mad with him. Cheers, Terry. ;D ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I will look more in to this and let you guys know.
The wisco kit is $500.00 alone so this might not be a bad
investment after all.

Still need to pull apart the head and check to see if they are
heavy springs, ti retainers etc,etc

thanks for all of your opinions as they are  greatly apriciated.

(what ever happined to spell check)

Just took the top end off a stuck motor.... This is a great thread. I am just lurking. Lots of Ideas.

I think I recall a conversation with Axl and Bud that the mods north of 1000cc had issues with oil leaks since the bore was pushing the tolerances of the available sleeves at the time.

Did Norris cams make a kit for these bikes, cause the engine in mine( I was told) had been bored to 900cc or so. I have one bill showing all the parts but can tell nothing.

Sorry for the off topic but I remembered this time. :)

For motors over 1000cc talk to Ken at CycleX.  He's got a customer bike with an engine he built that has over 15.000 miles on a 1000cc engine.  Cooling is fine and no oil leaks or headgasket problems.  If you bore and re-sleeve the jugs properly it won't leak oil.

Correct, 3mm will take it to 64mm, or 811cc.  ;D

Ok.. the point I was trying to make was price a 836 kit, and the Machining cost to fit it up.. as a starting point..

Now cut that in 1/2 for your used kit if it appears to be in runnable condition.

Will call the seller tomorow and see whats going on about the 955 motor.
If that was just a big mistake then
I might try to negotiate getting all the SOHC stuff that is sitting in his brother-in-laws
house for the mix up

Hes across town (I hate Atlanta traffic) so it will be next weekend and I will take my camera

Well, now  WTF?

I have seen kits for 400 f from Taiwan. Do I want to bore out a 350f? Do I want to see if  the guy with the 400f  jugs wants $20  for them  (he might!)

He hasn't seen a 350f in 20 years he says.

Will his 400 's be a beter starting point to make a 405 than the 350's I have?

It  still won't be a six speed.

What about using spare parts, used rings  and having just  spare motor? Will that work at all? Either is fine with me I guess, until I get a faster unit or find out overbored sh8 is less dependable and unusable after taken to extra duty ranges. Then you can't go back without resleeving. Can you do even  that anymore without custom macining expense?

I figure small increments on the mods, lots of miles betwix.
