955 motor
« on: November 28, 2007, 02:17:58 PM »
Has anyone ever herd of a K model engine that,s  been bored
to 955cc,s?
There is a someone just down the street from me that has
a drag bike project that he is selling. He said that he motor has been bored to
955cc. Head was ported and flowed with over size valves and all the goodies that is required to keep it all together
Just wondering why this configuration
The motor has never been fired so this might be an interesting project

Yank out the 836 and replace it with this monster

might be fun

I would think it has had oversized sleaves Jimmy, I think 836cc is the max for the stock block.

The pistons would be 69.45mm, that might be the max without opening up the cases.

Go for it if the price is right. :)

Sounds like the "drag bike" that was on craigslist a week or two ago.  Do a search for "drag bike" in this forum and you'll prolly find the thread about it.  I wouldn't buy it unless you really trust him or you take the head off.  I've bought motors that were supposedly 900+ and opened 'em up to find cruddy stockers inside.

If thats the case Mike, I wonder why he didn't go the whole hog and build a big motor ?

Thing is,  when you see the bike, makes me wonder if the guy had a clue WTF he was doing. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I would want to see inside that motor before parting with any real bucks ;D ;D ;D ;D

get a cylinder light, pull a plug, if it looks like a big bore great.

Look at the intake port for evidence of porting, great.

Look for non-stock valve-springs/retainers.

If it has those 2 and or more.. buy it.. especially if you can talk to who built it and can confirm.

A good  836 kit..pistons, rings. gaskets is about 400 or more, after boring the cylinders you will be over 500 bux..

The 73mms were 1055cc and and everyone called them 1080s. I guess they thought that was OK because Honda called a 736 750.

Those could be done in stock blocks if you used the block that didn't have the kidney shaped vent holes on the bottom. Had to use the block that the vent holes looked like a parallelogram.

Then if you added a 6mm stroked crank, it was 1155cc.

There are no pistons or sleeves available anymore for that stuff.

It was actually impossible to get the 750 head to breath enough for those large motors, so they were RPM limited.

I dont know how much on a dyno, but a few got in the 9,s!

HP is not as relevant as being able to put it on the ground.

For suprisingly quick ET,s look at Dale Walkers site, Holeshot Performance.. or engineering....under history..

Rear wheel dynos were not around back then. We had people running 9.50s on those big motors and tons of compression and wheelie bars.

By contrast, when Prostar ran a 600 supersport class, the record was below that with 600cc, dot tire , and no bar.

I've got a set of 73mm pistons and sleeves out in the garage, they look like the RC pistons in my 836 engine, just much bigger! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well the beast is home
I did check the bores with a scope (big pistons and valve releafs cut into the pistons)
cylinder walls still showed a good cross hatch.

He contacted the shop  (about 30 mins from my house and I know they guys down there) (they build and drag race prostreet bikes and pro stock bikes) and told them that he wanted to build a 955 engine. new sleeves but didnt have to cut the lower cases to accept the bigger pistons.

Kicked it threw and everything turns. you can tell there is a lot of compression by the resistance in the kick starter.
the head was built here in Georgia by elmer trets shop. I will take some pictures of everything and post them.

Heavy Springs with Ti retainers. Not sure about the cam profile.
the motor is going to be torn down and checked out.
The guy tells me that he raced this as an 836 for a season and decided to
build a bigger motor and this is where he lost interest. He has raced these SOHC motors for 20 years and he said he never had an engine let go in the 836 config or the 1036 config. He did try to build a stroker motor that was in the 1100 cc a few times but keep blowing these up so he decided to keep his motors under 1000 cc for more reliablitiy.

He also said that his brother has a shop full of SOHC stuff and he will call me. (licking his chops) and I will post
the find as soon as I hear from him

well keep everyone posted

Jim

Don't think you could do a 955cc and not have to bore the lower case for the larger sleeves.

Yeah, you better check that Jim, the new pistons, if they're 955cc, are getting close to 70+mm, which makes them as big or bigger than the OD of the original cylinder sleeves, (70mm) and the cylinder spiggot holes in the top case are only 71mm so either the cases have been bored, or it's an 836 (65mm) or 850.(65.5) Maybe it's an 855? . Cheers, Terry. ;D

You going to give him everything back in exchange for $500? He gave it to you for cheap so he wanted to get rid of it. Split the difference if the stuff is useable. That way he doesn't have to haul it back. Don't forget to check out the other stuff at his brother's.

Bummer.
