cb550 spin on oil filter
« on: November 27, 2007, 05:20:41 PM »
I have a 1975 cb550 with a chrome spin on oil filter. Does anybody else have this setup? If so, what is the manufacturer and part number of the filter.  I have tried to find this filter at the Honda dealer, internet, and local Farm and Fleet store. The after market 4 into 2 exhaust pipes are too close to the round filter,  .25" on one side to go back to the original 2 piece filter.

Hi, Sweep. What do you mean by a spin on adaptor. Please describe it. All I have is a 1" pipe nipple with two different threads on each end. The metric end of the pipe nipple is screwed into the engine and the filter goes on the other end. The filter I have has an OD of 3 7/8"  and it has the O ring at 3 7/8". I tried the PH3600, way too small diameter, One of the engine oil ports is not covered.

I would take your pipe and a ruler to an auto parts store, there are a lot of filters and one must fit.
The adaptor I've seen is a plate with a "bolt" that threads into the engine with a thin hex head. You use the stock O-ring and tighten down the plate, the "bolt" has a threaded pipe sticking up for the filter to thread onto.

hey Greg, I had the same thing on my 400f. I assumed it was something a previous owner made up, but maybe a company was selling these things years ago. I'm pretty sure there are spin ons available with the correct diameter. I ended up going back to the stock setup.

Saw these on ebay a while back. Maybe this is what you are dealing with? Filters are Rocky pn#14-1598... I have no idea if these are currently available.

Happy trails.

That's it Greg, they were aftermarket chrome spin on filters with threaded adapters that fit all the SOHC4's, plus the CBX and GL1000. I buy them whenever I see them come up on Ebay, if you can find a supplier of new ones let me know, I've only got a couple left! Cheers, Terry. ;D

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

if the ph3600 fits, but is too small in diameter, buy a ph43,that will do the trick.

Just a few more thoughts.....

I'm finding it a little hard to believe that the stock filter doesn't fit... a bit snug maybe, but, doesn't fit ??? ??? ???

I would forget about trying to find a filter that will screw onto the stud from the old filter. The Honda engine has a piece sticking out where the stud screws in - auto filters will bottom out there before the gasket touches the engine case. The Rocky filters were specially made for these engines.

I've heard rumors that there is someone around here that makes spin-on adapters and oil cooler kits and such... Any help there, Terry?

Happy trails.

Thanks for all the info and advice guys. I will go down the list: try to track down the Rocky filters, try the auto spin on filters mentioned, try and track down the spin on filter adaptor plate, and lastly try to get access to a stock housing and try to shoe horn it in.
