Max tire size on 19 x 3" rim
« on: November 29, 2007, 07:59:20 AM »
Ok, I have a question regarding max tire size.  I am running 19" rims front and back on a cb550.  The front is 2.5" wide, the rear is 3.0".  I am running a cb 750 swingarm to accomodate a larger rim and tire.  My question is, how large of a tire can I run on the back.  I am running a 120/90-19 on the front, and am looking for something wider, but not taller than the front.  Any suggestions? Thanks

Well, let me rephrase the question.  It's not so much the largest size I can fit, but also includes what people think might look the best.  I have run 16" rim in the back, and know what looks good for that size, but I haven't run a 19" before so I would just like an idea of what may look the best and keep a fluent flow with  the front. Thanks

About the only combo that fits your requirements is:
Front 120/90-19   4.72" wide x 27.5" tall
Rear 120/80-19   4.72" wide x 26.6" tall
-or-
Rear 130/80-19   5.12" wide x 27.2" tall

Any combo that requires the rear tire to be shorter than the front, must go with shorter rims or lower aspect tires
e.g. 150/80-18  5.91"wide x 27.4" tall
-or- 150/70-19  5.91"wide x 27.3"tall

Ya, my original plan was to run a 130/80 in the back and was hoping someone might have a good picture of what I could be expecting.  I realize what tire companies recomend for max tire size, but is there any way to squeeze on a 140 or thereabout.  I found a akront 19x3" rim and couldn't pass up the price for $31.00.   I am hoping to pull off more of a race look with an even to mildly sweeping up rear.  I am just a little worried that it might not look balanced with a narrow rear tire.

140/80-19  5.51"wide x 27.8"tall fails to meet your criteria that the rear tire must be shorter than the front, unless you went with front tire that was taller, such as a 130/90-19 Front 5.12"wide x 28.2"tall (it would fit the rim but would probably be too wide for the front fender) -or- an Imperial measure tire, such as 4.25H19 that would be about 4,37"wide x 27,82"tall (would also fit the rim but most likley still be too wide for the front).

Why did you go for a 19 inch rear mate? Apart from leaky old British iron, the only 19 inch rears I've seen are on modern dirt bikes............. oh wait, you're not running dirt bike wheels on it are you?  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Alright, here's the deal.  The front will have no clearance issues as it is a inverted fork from a 2002 gsxr, and I need something nice and meaty up there to not look funny, but I want to stay way away from a sport bike wheel.  I has taken quite a while to find a way to run a 19" spoked wheel infront by making a custom hub.
As for the rear, I wanted a taller stance, and to keep away from the smaller harley rims that everyone seems to go with.  With that being said, I am not worried about the rear being slightly taller than the front, I just need to find something that may look appropriate and in it's place.  I am hoping it will develope an old approach to a newer sportbike look without crossing the line, maybe I am asking too much.
